The part that amazed me about reading "His Family" was the similarities of the world in 1917 to today. Immigration, generational differences concerning morals, aging, the struggle to maintain relevance in one's children's lives etc. This novel is an example of why I read books written in the time of the author's life. The author, Ernest Poole, was the first to receive the Pulitzer Prize, and it was for this book. Well worth reading.

Who ever thought punctuation was so important?! There are not enough words to describe how much I enjoyed this book. For teacher's this book is written in a way where you can pretend your students are the students in the book. Play out your classroom as the book does and speak with incorrect punctuation when the book is written in such a way. Students will begin to realize how important punctuation is to sentence meaning and comprehension. I used this in a lesson on punctuation usage and my students loved it. They were excited to "help" the students in the book get the punctuation marks to come back. So many lessons can grow from this single book and the book itself is both entertaining and educational. It involves guessing the punctuation, correcting the punctuation, and it truly demonstrates the vitality of correct punctuation usage. After reading this book and gaining a better understanding for the need of punctuation, students where pointing out punctuation marks all day long!

It really shows the current Philippine scenario especially on drug addicted teens and adults. I love it. after reading the book, I felt heavy inside. However, i was a bit unsatisfied with the ending. i wanted more. Bob ong left me hanging.

My mother was a circus performer in an RV circus. She mentioned that her circus was not cruel to the animals, but that the lines between performers and roustabouts was definitely solidly drawn, and that sexual rivalries were not uncommon. The book is dark and in many places is disturbing, but the story kept me rapt throughout. It paints a vivid picture of train circus life while telling one unique tale of difficult romance, rivalry, and struggle during the Great Depression. I recommend this book.

Publishers take note: you would've had better sell through if your initial release had been MMPB. I would have dropped $7.99+tax to get my Chess/Terrible fix and the opportunity to check out several new-to-me authors - whose books/series I definitely plan on purchasing in the future. Which makes me wonder how many other people might pass up this volume due to the high cost/iffy pay-off associated with anthologies and no library access. Think about it New York.
