There is something about the way Jane Austen writes that makes her books timeless. Mansfield Park was a delightful read, however it was very long, and had a lame ending. Star rating: can I skip that for this book? Sum up of the story (aka spoilers): Fanny is taken in at the age of 10 by her well to do aunt and uncle who live in Mansfield Park (hence the name). She has a good heart, and always does as she should, though she is not always treated nicely by her relations. After she has been at Mansfield for some years her uncle leaves to take care of some business across sea. During his absence her cousin becomes engaged to a man of large fortune but the wedding is postponed until her father's return. Also during the uncle's absence her cousins and some acquaintances decide that they are going to act out a play, a scheme which Fanny's uncle is sure to object to. The play is the catalyst for some intrigue among said party. Suddenly, Fanny's uncle returns from oversea, he puts an end to the acting scheme, and all seemingly returns to normal. Fanny's cousin marries, most of the family party disperses. Finding society to be so much diminished, a local acquaintance (of consequence and fortune) decides that he is going to make Fanny fall in love with him, just for the fun of it. In the course of flirting with Fanny he falls in love with her himself and proposes marriage to her. She refuses, to the surprise and dissatisfaction of everyone. The man decides that he will continue to court her and hopes to earn her heart in time for is is very much in love with her and knows he will make her happy. It is decided that Fanny will go and visit her family for a couple of months (and see the relative poverty of her family and thus come to her senses with regards to the marriage proposal opened to her). While visiting with her family, Fanny's admirer comes into the neighborhood for no other reason except to see her. She is finding that she could be falling in love with him after all. Meanwhile back in Mansfield her cousin is deathly ill, and Fanny is sorely missed. Her return to Mansfield is delayed. The remainder of the book is the lame ending that I referred to earlier: The man very much in love with Fanny elopes with Fanny's newly married cousin. Fanny's other female cousin elopes with an obscure acquaintance. The family is ruined. Fanny returns to Mansfield, and by the by marries her cousin Edmund who had always been her friend. The end. Like I said, lame ending. All of this build up and drama, and then the scandal and the story abruptly ends. She ends up happily married, true. But I would hardly call that the happily ever after I was expecting after so much build up. Moral of the story, stick to Pride and Prejudice and Emma, they end well.
