This book caused a huge buzz when it was first published, for... originality? I forget now. The story is original, at least to me. The romance part is pretty well done and many of the secondary characters are well-drawn. It's a little light on plot, even for me, and I'm not a huge plot person. I kept reading because of the magical, surreal mood and the visual descriptions of the circus, the performers, the costumes, the tents, and the acts. This book screams to be made into a movie - I would love to see it on the screen - but I'm afraid it doesn't have enough plot for that. Where it should have been building tension, it didn't, which was ok with me, since all I really wanted was to hang out at the gorgeous circus with the other groupies ("reveurs").

I thought I'd love this, since it is French and on the surface it seems very similar to Sfar, Trondheim, and the like. De Crecy shows much of the absurdity I enjoy from French cartoonist, but this book just isn't that funny or fun to read.
