This is one of the most powerful books I've read. It's an autobiography of a young girl and her family during the oppressive Pol Pot regime. I traveled to Cambodia last year with only a faint idea of what the Khmer Rouge was and of what actually happened in that country in the late 1970s. Loung Ung's story is a story is one of survival. If it weren't, it would be too heartbreaking to bear. Under Pol Pot, people were forced to leave their homes in the cities and move into the countryside where they were to be "rehabilitated" as farmers where many died of starvation or were executed by the Khmer Rouge. It decimated the population. Today, forty percent of the population is under the age of 15. Cambodia is an amazingly beautiful place. The 1,000-year-old temples of Angkor are some of the most amazing structures ever built. The people of Cambodia are warm and welcoming. I am humbled by their strength.

I thought this book was very average. Ms. Leroy did a good job of providing conflict within the character, Vivienne, a love affair with a German soldier within the context of war and occupation. However, I didn't feel the terror that must have affected the townspeople, their feelings of desperate helplessness. I liked how Ms. Leroy wove her descriptions of the island, the garden flowers and fruit into the storyline. Upon finishing the book, I felt that I would have liked it better if she had provided more character detail and had more sense of suspension and suspense in the plot.

Was an 18 year old stoner when I first read this book and I thought it was amazing. Lots of sex and war and rebellion. Upon second reading, the book didn't hold up for me. Five years and a college education later I think Marquez embraces melodrama too heartily and so, despite the motley assortment of characters and dramatic pratfalls that fill the pages, the book ultimately comes up empty handed. There is beautiful imagery to be found, but no great truth.

This is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read by and about a great writer and filmmaker. If you haven't seen any of his films, I recommend them highly but this book will be just as entertaining if you have not seen them. A lot of boring people have written about Sturges life, perhaps more accurately (I don't know) but this is far better than anything they've come up with. Perhaps the most awful and funny thing in it is the ending: SPOILER ALERT- he dies as he's writing the final chapter and the book abruptly comes to an end. I hope to meet someone else who has read this book someday.
