An interesting memoir from a man whose family fled to Japan during the initial strife in Korea and was wooed to be part of the political elite in North Korea. His descriptions of life in the gulag were terrifying and fascinating, as was how his time in the gulag affects his life now. I highly recommend it for a better understanding of what's going on in North Korea.

** spoiler alert ** There ARE spoilers. You have been warned!! My rating is a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I had to step back and marinate on my thoughts about this book right after I finished. Well, being the BDB fan-addict that I am, I took Lover Unleashed release day off from work (what? don't look at me crazy, you know you would too if you could) so I can read unhindered all day. I started early Tuesday morning and finished it early Tuesday evening. Was it worth it? hmmm This book was a mixed of things. Now I LOVED LOVED LOVED Payne and Manny together. There was not enough of them together for me. I also think it was 'suppose' to be more romance on the side of Payne and Manny, her being a virgin and all. (Save me from teh virgins!) It was smexy at times, especially when Manny was 'servicing' Payne to 'help her get better'. But I got a slightly Phury and Cormia vibe every time their plot line showed up. Whole lot of talking and not enough 'doing' if you know what I mean. Shower scene was made of awesome though. If you were reading your kindle version like me, you would note, like I did, that actual smex between them didn't come until like 92% into the book. I think that was some where within the last 5 chapters of the book. There was a lot of V and Jane. A LOT.There was more than I thought there would be, which was not a necessarily a bad thing because V is one of my fav Brothers. And there was some V 'in-hand' and smexin' action so it was all good! It's apparent that V is still having issues even after he's been mated Jane. But it could have been V's book part deux for all the drama he brought. The whole Butch and V BDSM scene was definitely interesting even though the outcome I imagined did not materialize. Then there was the Qhuay. *sigh* We all know that their situation would still remain unresolved, but I still wanted to pull my hair and shake both of them. I'm not quite liking that Layla is mixed into this. Not.At.All. A whole new cast of characters were introduced, and you don't know if you are suppose to like them or hate them after a short little turn of events with Payne. Whose side are they on really? And how much do you really care? I didn't really care about the newbies. There are still too many other brothers that needed attention and didn't get it. There was no Tohr and where was Lassiter? Yes, I know authors probably have to slice and dice and decide what's more important and cannot write about everyone. But still...*sighs* Noticeably absent is a Lessor storyline. Was that because we had so much of it in Lover Mine? Or because the 'band of bastards' showed up and there wasn't enough room in that town for both? Again, hmmm. The whole Veck/Del a Cruz storyline was completely from out of left field for me and I didn't see the point. Where did it tie in? So, was my day spend wisely? I'm glad that I had the chance to read it all in one shot so I wouldn't keep wondering what's next. It's not a bad addition to the series I don't think, but I am just a little disappointed. There was some reveals that I knew were coming (Butch and Manny were brothers) and some I didn't know, that was HUGE (who Qhuinn saw in the Fade). I REALLY missed the smexy. I mean, Manny was FREAKIN' HOT!! (most def phearsom!!) How could you not have him knockin' Payne's boots 24/7? Really? Would I rec this? Even with all the issues I have with this book, yes I would still rec it. If you are a fan of BDB (or a fan-addict like me and have to have all things BDB), you will still want to read this. Even if it's only to understand the stuff that maybe in the next book. And I will probably take the day off again for the next release that I'm highly anticipating. LOL

This third book in the Fablehaven series picks up where book 2 ended. It begins with Seth and his sister trying hard to stay at Fablehaven (whereas in book 1 they were trying very hard not to go!). From there it gets stranger, as Kendra is shipped off to handle a task that even adults would quail at, and Seth, impudent, disobedient, willful Seth, is left behind. Somehow I wonder how he is able to go into the good areas, as much as he breaks rules, but that's another part of the magic of the book. He is the first to notice the shadow people, with Coulter coming back and only Seth can see him. I felt almost as though this were a gift to him - something to keep him occupied, and not make him out to be a non-magic entity when his sister's magic is so strong. That said, he played a key role in this story, as the only one who could see the shadow people. I don't feel that was ever explained, though it did work as a good device to keep him active, as already mentioned. Part of the reason it took a while to read this story, as opposed to the others, was that it kept switching completely between plots. Kendra was off finding a boy she liked (someone much too old - 18 to her 15) and saving the world, while Seth was at Fablehaven being obnoxious - and saving the little bit of magic at Fablehaven. Along the way, there is some interesting character building, including a reintroduction to Vanessa, imprisoned at the end of book 2 on the word of the long-lived Sphinx, who she said was a bad guy. The twist here is that while the Sphinx has always given sound advice and assistance, he could be a traitor. But can Vanessa be trusted? Can the Sphinx? What about the Knights of the Dawn? It almost felt as the effort to retrieve another hidden artifact was lost in the byplay. Plus, I am not sure, even with the suspension of disbelief, if I understand why it has become necessary to recollect these magical items when they were hidden long ago by wiser people than were so easily manipulated in this story. Overall though it read well, and I liked the reintroduction of Lena and the time travel of Patton.

Seventeen year old Liza first meets Annie at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The two become fast friends even though they are very different. Liza comes from an upper middle class family and goes to private school and hopes to go to MIT when she graduates. Annie comes from a lower middle class family and is a talented vocalist who attends public school and hopes to attend college at the University of California, Berkley. Their relationship quickly grows more and more intense and soon the girls share their first kiss. Annie and Liza are both confused by this and struggle with the possibility that they might be gay. The book is an exploration of the friendship and love between the two girls. It was originally published in 1982; it was fascinating to see how far we as a society have come with regard to attitudes about homosexuality. In many ways this book wasn't much different from any young adult novel about first love. In fact, when this book published it was the first of it kind - a young adult novel with homosexual protagonists that had a hopeful message. I listened to the audio version of this book, which included a recent interview with the author at the end. One of the things the interview asked her about was if the book had ever been banned in light of its controversial subject matter. She said the only place it had ever been banned was in Kansas City. Since I'm from the Kansas City area I found this particularly interesting and horrifying. I really enjoyed this book both as a young adult romance and as a piece of LGBT history.

I had heard that this book was a disappointment so my expectations were low, but I enjoyed it. It wasn't terribly sophisticated and was a bit X-Menish, but still. I thought it was pretty fun.

Glad to have read this one before the movie was made, as I think the writing skills here, honed to perfection by an LA street-journalist, are indeed noteworthy. (Can't see how the movie could match it, though trailers show it to be a tip-top production). The power of the narrative moves along like a commuter train, going, going, then stopping to pick up some other stranded soul, or stopping to look a little closer at what the main character (a homeless man) is really all about. And can we know? Perhaps not, because this character, so adeptly captured by Mr. Lopez, is as changeable as a wet hen, moving through various and unpredictable phases of music, mood and thought. What we get to see here, in the writing, is the real struggle to understand a fellow in distress, while all the while that understanding may be too far beyond our earthly sight to settle with.

I was glued from the very start. This book barely made it through one day. I am definitely going to check out his other books.

Ok I'm done reading...it started slow but it was okay after you're over halfway to the book. It's not as good as the previous books but it'll do.
