"Lord knows at least I was there. And I'm here. I'm still here. Look who's here!" (insane applause.) Sadly, I was not there when the original production of Follies marked the end of what many consider the Golden Age of the Broadway musical. I recoil at such dramatic declarations, and yet...there is some truth to them. Ted Chapin was lucky enough to be a gofer/production assistant and "observer" during the rehearsal process of Follies, and thirty years later he offers this classy but juicy memoir about his experiences. Time and distance add weight to what was once a journal-turned-paper (he was a junior in college at the time), and I relished the great stories in this book from start to finish. I only wish Chapin could have written this book *after* the recent (Feb 07) concert version at City Center, which was mind-blowing. I'd love to know what he thought of it!

Au départ, il faut rappeler la série Cranford, réalisée pour la BBC et adaptée de trois ouvrages de Mrs Gaskell, dont celui-ci. Les Confessions de Mr Harrison nous racontent, en seulement 140 pages, l'arrivée du jeune docteur à Duncombe, la ville jumelle de Cranford, où vivent majoritairement des veuves et des vieilles filles. Son statut de célibataire lui confère bien des égards, imaginez donc, c'est la course avec les coups de coude, les ronds de jambe empruntés, les bouches pincées et les mines contrites, un pur régal pour le lecteur qui savoure cet étalage de minauderie. Mr Harrison, en plus d'être un médecin débutant qui doit faire ses preuves et combattre les clichés, use de tout son flegme et de toute la bienséance de son rang pour ne pas s'embourber dans des situations maladroites, en y parvenant difficilement - le contraire serait ennuyeux ! De plus, le jeune homme s'est entiché de la fille du clergyman, la seule qui ne se plie pas au jeu de la séduction, et cherche à tout prix à l'apercevoir, lui parler et passer du temps en sa compagnie, bataillant contre la horde des amazones qui veulent sa peau de célibataire ! C'est parfaitement cocasse. L'image faite des femmes de Duncombe n'est pas très flatteuse, mais il y a de l'affection derrière, qu'on se le dise. Les Miss Tomkinson ou Mrs Rose ne sont pas que désespérées, il ne faudrait pas les réduire à des hystériques en quête d'une situation, même si Mrs Gaskell dépeint là une triste et cruelle réalité. Ne nous leurrons pas. Derrière ce court ouvrage, j'ai replongé à Cranford. Tous mes souvenirs liés à cette série sont réapparus et le bonheur a été immédiat. Ce fut bien court, mais bien bon.

This is a love it or hate it book. I am closer to the latter. Lots of metaphors and symbolism in this novel. I kept hearing how wonderful this book was so I made myself muddle through it hoping for the good parts. Didn't find them. I invested so much time reading and wished I had stopped before I started. To me it was so over-written. Also the graphic nature goes on and on. Now there is a movie and I'm not sure I want to see it. Sorry friends I just did not like it!
