It was a good book depicting history in a different view point and life; that of a child. I found some parts to be dull and the majority of the chapters did not have much suspense aside from the last few chapters. It is an okay book. I liked the way it was written, in the concept that it flowed nicely. I did not however like the fact that the ending of the book was one that was very predictable. This attribute is something that irritates me in books, so I think that is why I gave it the lower rating.

Bored bored bored. I'm so bored that I don't even want to finish this book. The plot feels very contrived and oh-so-convenient as events stack up one after the other almost neatly. The characters feel like cardboard cutouts with little depth and feeling, and the writing style seems unfinished and a bit sloppy, like this is a work-in-progress. I don't expect long flowery phrases in YA books (I leave those for the realms of Patricia A. McKillip) but if I have to read another sentence about how 'cute' someone is I might consider hurling in true teen fashion. I understand there are only so many ways for saying how attractive someone is but writing should be a creative process in which new ways or phrases are used for describing similar things or finding ways around it. Repetition in wording is not always a good thing, and not especially in this case. I feel quite guilty writing such a poor review of this book but picking this book up after finishing such an amazing YA trilogy (Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa) I wonder if I've set my expectations too high? I know there is a broad spectrum of reading available for all types and ages. And I try to not write a book off completely even if it is set for a younger audience because I know there are YA books that keep me captivated. This just isn't one of them. I think this could be a quick read for the much younger spectrum of YA readers but don't expect a complex and/or delicate plot line full of surprises and twists because you're not going to get it. But if you are looking for a simple and light story that you can flip through maybe you might like this? It could just be that this is not my cup of tea.

It was an okay read, I guess. Bingo Palace was a lot better, though, I think. If the stories had been put in order by the time-line they happened on, it would have made a lot more sense. As is, I was a little lost through the entire book.

Great book, gives a real insight into how ancient greece trained their warriors, and how the battle of the Hot Gates (english translation for the battle of the "300") unfolded. haven't seen the movie, but the movie is not based on this book. highly recommended, but has blood and gore, so not for all

I liked the beginning, but after the middle of the book, I found I had better things to read. I'm just not a non-fiction person, maybe. Actually, I never finished Snow Flower and Secret Fan, either! It is fascinating, though, to read about interracial marriages during that era. My own family has interracial marriage in it, so it has always been an interesting and relevant subject.
