this book really dragged for me....there were some redeeming things about it, but I wouldn't recommend it as a great read to anyone. The book summary just made it sound more intringuing than it really was...yes, it was one of those books

So this book was a very fun read. Sarah MacDonald is an Australian whose journalist husband gets relocated to India for a while. She goes with him, and quickly finds herself wondering why she thought it was a good idea. At face value, India wasn't quite what she expected it to be, but as she acclimated herself to the land and the people she came to really love it. I think my favorite moment in the book was when she went to see Amma, the hugging guru. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't read the book yet, so you'll just have to trust that it's worth it. Reading this book was what first planted the idea of spending an extended amount of time in India into my brain, and I still really want to go there someday so I can experience it all. For now, however, occasionally rereading "Holy Cow" will have to do.

Ah, dystopia! Perhaps more important now than ever (as the cover attests, I believe)! Check out the edition with the intro by Thomas Pynchon if you can.

Oh, where to start without giving anything away? It is an epic story with incredibly beautiful and sensitive writing. I took awhile to get fully into the web of the story, but once caught, I couldn't leave. My limited reading of readers reviews allowed me free rein to enjoy the book on my own. I don't like anyone telling me what I should and shouldn't like. Ultimately, I feel compelled to defend this story. Who says anthropomorphism ruins literature? If it is handled well, is brief and not overdone, it works. It did, magnificently. I was taken by it and glad it didn't last long. That might have ruined the sensitivity. I was a little jolted by the fragmentary characters such as Ida, the little girl, the man in the shed, however I can not join the crowd who say that the author didn't build up his characters with enough information. You got enough of each of them to gather what you needed to understand their place in the story. Ida was introduced early on as an odd bird. Her trances are able to give information to those who seek it. Trudy was torn, but listened. Edgar, too. What more do you need? Doesn't every small town have a person that people are a little spooked by? You don't need to know more than what was portrayed. The man in the shed was a bit unnecessary even to me, but he was there and I dealt with it and moved on. He didn't ruin the story for me. The vision in the rain and in the barn towards the end was reassuring to me, not destructive. I felt Edgar was very well explained. He grew so much in the story and developed completely. His voice was loud and clear to me at all times. The uncanny ability he had communicating with the dogs that was completely wordless. Dogs can't talk, so why is it far-fetched to have them understand a silent language of sign and visual clues? Anyone with animals knows they read our body language even when they don't understand our words. The training of the dogs did play a huge part in this novel, but I found it structured the characters-gave them depth and determination. A binding gift, something that tied them all to the land, each other and the dogs. The silent language that builds over time in relationships between husband and wife, parent and child and siblings as well. Not all of those languages are healthy as in Gar and Claude's situation. I didn't need to have the 'whys' fed to me as some of the critical readers apparently did. I don't need to know why Gar and Claude were at odds, they just were. It ran deeply and was scarring. Anyone who has known brothers or sisters who have fought knows that sometimes the hurts don't go away with age and time. I don't need to have the ending spelled out. Isn't it obvious? I don't have to have everything tied up into a neat bow of conclusion in order to appreciate the fine art of this author's work. Read this book and make your own decisions. We are all entitled to love or hate a book. What appeals to one, repels another. I felt that though it was a very long story, it built in intensity. It could have been shorter, but who would you eliminate? The marvelously "ordinary" Henry? One of the dogs? Trudy and Gars agony in their early marriage? Almondine? I miss all of these characte I think we all need an Almondine in our lives.

In this third installment from the Bullied Series, Seth continues his plight to seek revenge against the school bullies who have tormented him throughout his life. This time around he makes sure that his two close friends know what is going on. His friends are definitely doubtful, both of the existence of the power and the way that Seth is inflicting his revenge, but they eventually stand behind him. A new element to this book, obvious from the title, is the introduction of a Witch to the story – actually three witches. Seth finds out quickly that the witch, Anna, and her sisters will stop at nothing to gain the amulet and the powers held within. They intend to use the amulets for evil purposes, although we don’t know exactly what yet. This means that Seth must fully understand the power of the amulet in order to protect himself from their ruthless attacks. He also has to worry about the safety of Jim and his friends. In order to defeat the witches, Seth has to gain an understanding of their magic and their capabilities so he can learn how to defend himself against it. He makes a lot of mistakes along the way, but he eventually begins to comprehend what he is really up against. These witches are bullies, just like his enemies at school. He has no intention of letting them have the amulets. To be honest, I’m enjoying this series less and less with each book. The first book, Bullied, was fantastic. It was such an original idea and interesting storyline. The second book, Revenge, took a negative turn for me. I didn’t like that Seth was using his mind control capabilities to force the bullies to do further damage to the world instead of forcing them to do good. I think that was a misuse of such a phenomenal power. Now, in the third book, the story is so far off from where it started that it doesn’t really seem like the same story anymore. Seth’s battles are now with the paranormal world rather than the bullies. Frankly, I don’t see how any of this book sends a good anti-bullying message. Personally, I wish this series had taken the approach of having Seth save one bullied kid (or group of kids) at a time. Let him use his powers for saving others in his situation rather than just punishing people. I feel like he is completely missing the point of having such fantastic power. He is being very small minded. Again, this is a quick read. I read the first three books in the series all in one afternoon. I highly recommend reading Bullied, but I don’t have the same high praise for the sequels.

Une vision très sensible des petites choses qui rendent parfois la vie amère. Le dessin et la composition offre un ensemble de petites nouvelles illustrées très percutante.
