I picked this book up on one of those Barnes and Noble "by two get one free" table. It started off really well, but I think the author tried to shove too much plot into too little pages. About half way through the book, there wasn't a flowing plot anymore, but little snippets of the main character's life. I found myself wanting to know what happened during the years that he skipped, and sometimes, it was necessary to know what happened so that the story fell complete. However, it was still a good story, and since it was a free book, I'm not going to complain too much.

** spoiler alert ** About a woman who while driving her daughter to college wonders what she is going to do with herself. While everyone feels sad when their children go off to college this woman is really bummed. Made me wonder if her whole world was so wrapped up in her daughter what in the world did she do all day while her daughter was in school. I guess there are people like that but as they say only a boring person gets bored.

A student recommended this to me and I begrudgingly read it after trying to avoid it for months....I don't tend to like fantasy. This book surprised me, though. It's about a really ugly boy who is found and raised by a witch and her feline companion. There is one adventure after another as they yravel throughout the worlds...both this and the magic world. The best thing about reading the adventures of this trio was that the author put in many "fractured" fairy-tales. It's always fun to see a new spin on an old story....especially from the "villian's" side.

This book completely caught me by surprise. I couldn't put it down... it tells the tale of Laurel, a young woman who was attacked while in college -- an attack that left quite an impression on her. Currently Laurel works for a homeless shelter. When one of her residents dies, her boss gives Laurel (an amateur photographer herself) a box of his photographs. Convinced he was somehow tied to a rich family, quite infamous in Laurel's hometown, she goes on a quest to learn everything she can about the man and his family. The book adds an extra layer as it weaves much The Great Gatsby lore into its own story.

This is a great book for all you murder mystery lovers. I really enjoyed it. It is written very well. The author really captivates the reader. It takes place in England with a touch of Scotish and Irish history intertwined. She uses the suspense of the poem The Highwayman to set a kind of tone with the book. And it does have a touch romance to it. But worth the read. Here's the synopsis ... "Even his own honeymoon can't keep Scotland Yard's Chief Inspector Callum MacGregor from being entwined in a murder investigation. Compelled by a fierce Highland squall to seek shelter in a rickety old inn on the storm-stirred flank of Loch Ness, Callum and his new bride, Laura, soon find themselves wrapped in a mystery. A murdered girl, a missing student, a band of travelers lead Callum through a tale of deceit and intrigue as old, it seems, as the rugged Highlands themselves. Despite having to rely on witnesses as inhospitable as the Highlands weather, and with only an odd assortment of clues as murky as the dark waters of the Loch, Callam doggedly pursues truth--and the murderer."

I loved it and the ending teaches a good lesson but it might stress adults out.
