The Australian Slanguage is another bookring I signed up with fairly early after joining BookCrossing. It has been traveling around the world for the last three years and finally reached me in January. I wanted to read it to see just how much I'd picked up in my short stay as an exchange student in 1990. It seemed appropriate because the college I attended wanted to make me take an ESL course even though last I checked American and Australian are both dialects of English. In the end I didn't have to take the course (although I was willing to) but the administration decided it would be insulting (I thought it was funny) and put me in their Tasmania tourism class instead. My brief experience with the Australian slanguage is that it is as regional as any other dialect of English. Northern Tasmanians seem to use more British slang and pronunciation than their counterparts in Hobart. Hobart was probably the place where I had the most difficulty making myself understood. The bush near Sydney came closest to the stereotypical Australian accent (with the really strong 'a' sound in most words and the added 'r' on the end of any word ending in 'a'). Of course for all I know our guides could have been laying it on thick for the amusement of us Americans. The Australian slanguage tries to cover all the many nuances of the dialect, its accent, how it is often loathed as a low point the English language (I thought we had that covered here) and how various slang terms developed. Note to Australians and Brits: in the States, ass means arse; donkey means ass. We aren't being "polite" when we use the word ass. There is just one major flaw with the book: it's typesetting. The damn font is near illegible. There's no white space. There's not enough differentiation between regular text and block quotes. Then there is the ugly use of all caps (and not even small caps) to draw attention to the words being discussed. The book is hard on the eyes. If ever this potentially interesting book is brought back into print, I hope the next publisher has the sense to do a better typesetting job on it.

I just finished the audiobook and it wasn't until I went to log it into Goodreads that I realized I'd read it before. Apparently my opinion of it hasn't changed much, though I'd venture it benefited from a talented narrator. It's a terrific concept executed adequately at best. Like many of Crichton's novels.

I'm fascinated by the controversial reintroduction of wolves at Yellowstone National Park and had to read this book as soon as I saw it. (And what better place to read it than here in Montana?) Renee Askins' struggle against cattle ranchers, hunters, and the law was interesting, and I respect her for all of the sacrifices and hard work she put in to achieving the seemingly impossible, but at the same time, I sort of wish I could read the same book written by someone less involved in the campaign. Askins was far too emotionally involved to give an unbiased view of both sides of the battle (though, based on the death threats and chaos Askins had to endure from many of the cattle ranchers and hunters, I don't blame her for giving them a bad rep). I think it'd be interesting to read this same story from a journalist's point of view, one who was there for everything but could see both sides of the argument. Still, Askins brought up some very thought provoking points about the wild and the moral problems we must face when we try to control it, even if it is to save a species, or in this case, an entire ecosystem. And, if possible, this book made me even more obsessed with wolves and the wild.

** spoiler alert ** one penny hardback brand spanking new first edition! first line - All of a sudden Galileo felt that this moment had happened before - that he had been standing in the artisans' Friday market outside Venice's Arsenale and felt someone's gaze on him, and looked up to see a man staring at him, a tall stranger with a beaky narrow face. Solid 3*. At points even a 4*, however some things just didn't sit quite right e.g the verbal anachronisms heaped upon Galileo's internal dialogue (The f word? ORLY!? Wouldn't swear words back then would have been the same as they are in Sweden still, religious profanities *shrugs*). A good biography, lots of splendid science, the historical period down to a tee (except that forementioned cussing and a question as to whether coffee was availible in Italy back then) so why not more than 3.5*? Since Moxysox has taught me to look for tone, I cannot not look for it and have discovered just how many books don't have it and this was the problem here.
