This was my first "BIG" book that I read. I remember my Grandfather recommended it, and I spent the summer reading it on his back porch. Great memories, and a great introduction to the world of books.

Another science fiction favorite from my youth that has been reread many times. Synopsis: anthropological meditation on gender roles in society. Simply brilliant!

I found this book mildly disappointing because I was told it would be an incredibly frightening tale that would cause me to lose sleep, and it wasn't nearly that intense. However, I could see it being scary for a younger audience, which is what I believe it is intended for. Think of it as a fractured fairy tale from the warped imaginative mind of Neil Gaiman. It's a quick read (I read it in less than two hours) and worthwhile for any fans of his or fans of these style stories.

yawn...too much back story about vampires and werewolves, not enough action!

I have not found that many people who have read this book (well before I came on here) I really enjoyed it-the kind of book where you are completely transported into the situation and prompts you to consider what you would do if faced with the same circumstances.

Ex Machina is a great series with a really interesting concept, but unfortunately it's been getting a bit bogged down lately. The original quirky idea of combining Iron Man with the West Wing worked great at first but lately we are getting into super villains and alternate dimensions that detracts from what made Ex Machina really interesting in the first place: a modern realistic world reacting to a person with powers. The more they add superpowers the less this series is separated from the herd and that is a big problem when it is the only notable thing about your comic.

*** ORIGINAL REVIEW -- May 24, 2007 *** Propriety as prudery, melodrama as folly. Rectitude as integrity, passion as poetry. Austen finds both insufficient, beautiful, and utterly human. This novel grows on me in my old age, when I feel I've lived both sides a little more fully. The 1995 Ang Lee film version with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is well worth its running time. *** UPDATED REVIEW -- April 21, 2016 *** i listened to a beautifully narrated audiobook version of this classic and adored the new perspective it gave me on this book. i highly recommend this -- revisiting beloved classics through the gorgeously produced audiobooks that abound today. it's a different, equally valid experience. as always, austen draws characters who are a mixed bag of vice and virtue -- the heroes are warm and welcoming without being Mary Sues, and the villains are subtle, with lots of semi-redeeming characteristics, or at least have enough going for them that they can Pass as nonsociopaths in polite society. austen is subtle while sharply skewering. it's worth closely examining her approach to satire -- deft, pinpointed, and True.

This is a wonderful memoir of the life of Hanns Joachim Scharff, a German interrogator during WWII. The book mainly consists to Scharff's personal accounts taken from his private journals, that when written, were intended for family use. Author Raymond F. Toliver befriended Scharff and is responsible for this story's release. Toliver acts as a guide, clarifying some of Scharff's accounts and interjecting the recollections of many that had contact with Scharff. Towards to the end of the book Toliver delves into a dark side of WWII, one that is not often discussed, the American treatment of German POW's and the atrocities that these people suffered by the hands of their "liberators". Though Scharff does not come out and give a step by step instruction for his interrogation methods, but shares stories and recalls interrogations he preformed in a way that the reader can see his methods and the psychology used that would brand him as a master interrogator. This book is an excellent read for anyone interested in WWII from a German perspective, those that work within the intelligence community, who perform interrogations, or anyone that would appreciate a deeper understanding of WWII.
