I am not often drawn to spy thrillers, yet I could not put this novel down. Follett has a keen sense of psychology, and the story is peppered with insightful human moments, and a focus on character despite the ‘big picture’ war setting. He is known for meticulous research, and for writing strong female characters. Eye of the Needle has both, plus fascinating wartime detective work to keep any fan of police procedurals riveted. I would give it a zero if that is a choice. This made me feel sick with the amount of swears and vulgarity in the modern part of the story and the historical part was very upsetting to me he made it very hard for to know what was truth and what part he was making up! Left me feeling very dark and depressed.

The characterization is lovely; they are well rounded with realistic concerns and struggles. This novel illuminates the unique plight of Mexican-American laborers during the Great Depression, including forced deportation, labor strikes, competition from the Dust Bowl "Okies," profound discrimination, and horrific living conditions.
