I loved "The Shadow of the Wind" and had to immediately read this Spanish author's new book when I heard about it. It has in common with his first book The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, which plays a key role in the plot. The other point of commonality is the underlying theme of the love of books and writing. But that's all. This is a Faustian tale of great complexity, with the author-hero struggling to make sense of a world where reality and fantasy are difficult to separate. Set in shadowy Barcelona in the 1930's, this book is one of the best I've read in a long time.

Brilliant. Once I started reading Ayaan Hirsi Ali's autobiography I couldn't put it down. It tells the story of her upbringing starting in Somalia, then in in Africa, her political career in Holland, and what inspired her to write this book. I have so much respect for the author after reading this book. It takes an intelligent person to be able to rise above her upbringing and use her audience to enlighten everyone of the treatment of women in some muslim nations. Its scary how people are raised to hate just because and without even realizing who they are hating. Very brave of her to write this book and stand by her views despite all the extremists who now threaten her life.

As I populated the subjects of this book in my review, I realized why I probably didn't enjoy this book. Although for some, maybe this was a redemptive, uplifting story, for me it was all depressing and negative. Here are the subjects that stood out for me: Refugees, Death, Grief, Nigeria, race relations, Suicide, widowhood, adultery. No wonder I didn't enjoy it. To top it all off, the female characters written my a male author did not ring true for me at all. Sarah was so non-emotional a lot of the time that I felt it was obvious that she was not written by a female. I didn't believe a lot of her reactions after the death of Andrew and although some of the passages narrated by Bee were very lyrical, I just couldn't give this more than two stars. Sorry Mr. Cleave, maybe next time.

I love the ideas in this book. I found a lot of comfort in it. My only complaint is a lot of it is written in the third person, which I found odd.
