One of the great things about novels, particularly historical fiction, is that they bring things to life that you may know little, if anything about. I was aware that Australia was a penal colony for the British Empire and knew of the country's difficult and painful past with their Aboriginal population, but Kate Grenville's The Secret River personalizes it all in a sweeping tale loosely based on one of her ancestors. If that wasn't enough history, Grenville also throws in a good dose of the struggles of London's working class at the turn of the 19th century. This epic novel of convict-turned-colonist, William Thornhill, felt much bigger than its ~350 pages and is one of those that you really don't feel the impact of until you are nearly done. While I found it to be a bit slow going at times, it was difficult to not be fascinated, if not occasionally frustrated, by the complex relationship between the Thornhills and the Aborigines. It certainly stirred up the moral dilemmas for this white male living in a country with a similar colonial and conquering past. Not an easy book to read, but if you are looking to learn more about the Land Down Under this one is an eye-opener.

A great distopian book. Another of my favorite books which I think anyone should read. It goes a little on the sci-fi side of things, but does so in a "1984" sort of way. On my top ten of best reads of all time.

How could words possibly describe or critique a wordless novel? Dubiously, I would like to present a nearly unexplainable motif: Nigel Tomm's "The Most Popular Fiction..." is somehow similar to Harmony Korine's "A Crackup at the Race Riots." Perhaps I've naturally established this comparison because of the two novels' lack (or refusal) of linear organization. Both contain the appearance of an anonymous scrapbook found upon the side of a freeway. The central difference would be that Tomm's abandoned scrapbook expresses supposed illiteracy--somebody with similar ideas and no ability to write with language or words. "The Most Popular Fiction..." should not be demeaned of literary value though. Those who know of Nigel Tomm know of what a true wordsmith he certainly is. I've rated this novel with four stars rather than five because I feel that words fully attribute to the talent of Nigel Tomm. Nonetheless, this book, product, novel, gift, and item still ought to satisfy anyone with enough curiosity, patience, or admiration.

After reading the first chapter, up to page 50, I put this book aside. I didn't care for how the 5-year-old child was telling this story. After a couple weeks, I decided to pick it up again and finish it. I ended up reading the remainder in two days, as it did become more interesting when the main plot was revealed.

This book was great, I love seeing Razo as the main character. I enjoy how each of Shannon Hale's books look at a different character, but you still hear a lot about her previous characters. She also takes you to many different places, and each place seems vastly different and just as intricate and creative. This book (and all the rest in the series) was very well written!

I read this for a school assignment in my senior year of high school. The narrator keeps using the phrase "on that head." For example (and I paraphrase), "Darcy was singular; on that head, singularity was his calling card." Austen wrote at a time when the British aristocracy was shrewd, witty and rather up-front. Trollope, for all his powers of observation, wrote at a time when the British aristocracy was becoming a little snobbish. I'd much rather read Trollope, but it must be said that Jane Austen is immune to the lure of sentiment which snagged Trollope. She's genuine from start to finish.

A witty re-telling of the myth of Hermes. Hermes has a contemporary and breezy voice that will appeal to teens who enjoy mythology.
