This book was pretty good. Im a person that needs to read a book before I watch the movie, and I did the opposite with this. I was kind of lost with the book, because I kept thinking about the movie. But I thought it was good.

I found parts of this book to be truly beautiful. Not as "beat" as "On the Road" or "Dharma Bums" but a great book.

Before reading this book, I knew very little about Lavinia Warren other than the fact that she was married to General Tom Thumb. In this well-imagined look at her life, Melanie Benjamin recreates a unique time in American history populated by larger-than-life characters (no matter what their size). Once I started this engaging book, I simply couldn't put it down. Combining historical fact with well-researched creative license, Benjamin crafted a highly enjoyable work of historical fiction. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoyed Alice I Have Been or who enjoys the early history of the circus.

I feel like I should have liked this better and I didn't. I guess I'd give this 2.5 stars if I could.

i'm not a fan of Ms. Walker's projects per se (her color choices and patterns seem to not be my own style) but her methodology is genius... the techniques she teaches make much sense with regards to ease of construction, repair of the used-garments, and also saving money and wasted yarn.. a must-have for a full-time knitter...

3 1/2 stars. Funny peek into her life. I love to learn about other families and their life and culture.

The one where financial ruin forces Lord Lynton to marry rich merchant's daughter Jenny instead of his true love Julia. This is the first time I've read a Heyer book -- or for that matter any Regency -- that was about marriage rather than about courtship. I liked it very much. Adam is both warm and good, but immature -- another thing that I haven't seen in other Heyer books -- and so he has a lot of changes to go through over the course of the book. It was a pleasure to see him find a good balance of power with Jenny's father, or figure out how much she was quietly doing for him while he did nothing for her. Jenny doesn't change much; she gains confidence, and we get to know her better. I liked her very much, but then I don't need to be persuaded that sense is preferable to sensibility; I found Julia laughable pretty much from page one. (Speaking of sense and sensibility, in two places Jenny mentions that she's reading a Jane Austen novel. It takes considerable authorial confidence to invite that comparison!) I don't really see what Rockhill wants with Julia, when he sees through her so well that he can conspire with Jenny to change her mind. He knows how to manage her, yes, but it seems tiresome to have to do so.
