I was going to describe this as sort of like magic realism, but looking at the wikipedia article on the subject, I see it is considered very firmly in the genre - much more dystopian than Gabriel García Márquez or someone like that though - this and Nights At The Circus are my two favorites of hers.

This is an entertaining satire of the residents of the tony Brooklyn neighborhood, Prospect Park West. The characters are caricatures from Gawker, but who cares? It's most definitely a guilty pleasure--perfect for when you need some escapist dumb fun. The most character development you will get is learning what hip and esoteric products these consumeristas cherish. Never heard of half of them and I am so relieved! Mindless materialism, mindless sex, mindless relationships...it's all mindless. But rather fun. The satire of the food co-op is really quite priceless.

Arthur Cooper was a real person who, as a young man, escaped slavery in Virginia and went north to Massachusetts, where he married a free-born African-American woman, had several children, and moved to Nantucket Island, where in 1822 he was nearly captured by slave catchers but rescued by the Quaker community. The narrator of this novel is a fictional Quaker child, ten-year-old Phebe Folger. Arthur's wife, Mary, is hired by Phebe's father to care for her mother, bedridden since a carriage accident several months ago. Phebe has many concerns present in all children. She worries for her mother and resents her older sister's efforts to educate her. Phebe describes several months of her life as she gets to know the Cooper family. When the family is in danger of being captured, Phebe helps to save them. This was an inspiring novel about how a group of people, including young children, saw a great evil (slavery) and did whatever they could to prevent it. Middle grade readers who enjoy historical fiction are sure to enjoy it.

Very interesting look in to the life of a person who received a lobotomy in his pre-teen years.

Honestly, for me, this book dragged. There really was no excitement or waiting to see what was going to happen. I LOVE the narrator, he is wonderful, but he was the only thing keeping me reading the story. I love the premise, the setting, the characters, the overall plot. I just couldn't get into the book itself. I felt like the author was trying to be as realistic as possible, but kind of throw in a fantastical event to make something interesting happen. There is no mysticism, no build-up. The fantastical happens and no one bats an eye. I wanted to like this book way more than I did.
