Thoreau said, "A written word is the choicest of relics." As someone who loves to read, I agree completely. There were some real gems in this book - the sections on 'Sound' and 'Solitude' may end up being my favorite part of the book, since I also love watching & listening to nature. And he spent a very interesting 4 pages describing a war between red ants & black ants! But then he followed that up with a long, boring description of Walden Pond, how its shoreline is made of a belt of smooth, rounded white stones, how it rises & falls, etc. I guess I couldn't understand how he could make one so interesting and the other so boring - well, maybe I can; he couldn't seem to resist pontificating and judging. According to Thoreau, age does not bring wisdom; he's 30 & has not heard anything valuable from his seniors - sounds like a very strong ego in play, and it came thru at unfortunate times for this reader. Am I sorry I read this? No. Will I ever read it again? No.

I bought and read this book because of the book The Dogs of Babel. The ballad on which this story is based is interspersed throughout the Dogs of Babel, and I thought the ballad (or at least the part in the book) was so beautiful that I had to find out more about it. It's definitely a great children's story that centers around the ballad and if your interested in Scottish folklore, you should check it out.

I love Michael Moorecock's work, but the series I found was a bit sad and depressing. But this book is still more than good enough to stay in my collection. =)

If this was the first time I read this book and I was a mere 16 years old, I probably would have given it 5 stars. Flyy Girl was my first adventure into reading for pleasure. It was given to me from my cousin and it kept me occupied for a few days in the summer. So I'll always have a small bit of love for this book. It is now maybe 10 or so years later since the first and second and third time I read Flyy Girl and I see it so differently now. I admired Tracy. Maybe from a lack of my own self esteem. I wanted to have her party girl lifestle, but I knew that wasn't me. I can definitely say after rereading this book as an adult I'm more like Raheema personality wise. Now, I see Tracy as a troubled girl who just follows the wrong people and turn into a direction that wouldn't be healthy for anyone. And of course, she has her epiphany and changes her life around for the better. As for the Author, Mr. Tyree, I was really disappointed with the writing. From what he described, Tracy lived in an upscale black neighborhood, yet her language left a lot to be desired. I'm not from Philly so I don't know how integrated the areas are to have upscale areas right next to the hood (Oh wait, yes I do, I live in Baltimore). But as a child of better off parents, Tracy wouldn't have had a choice where to go. She would have been in private school and she sure wouldn't have been saying words like "chew" instead of "you" without getting popped in the mouth by one of her parents. These are not my kind of books anymore. I have moved on from the "ghetto novel" genre. It has gotten stale and it's really for a younger crowd (not saying I'm old at a mere 26). However, if someone were to ever find a book in this genre that really has some depth, please recommend it to me. So I know I'm rating this high. Because it probably should be a 3 star book. But I'm giving it an extra star for being my first book into pleasure reading and not just school assignments.

I loved this book. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. I loved it so much that I'm going out to buy copies for everyone I know and love. Molly's style of writing is so vivid, I swear that I can smell and taste her recipes (and her memories) from the pages of this wonderful story. It is so much more than a cook book -- it's her life, and just happens to include some amazing recipes. She reminds me of another favorite, Frances Mayes (Under the Tuscan Sun), in that her writing draws you in and you feel like you were THERE. Her stories are funny and sweet and poignant. I laughed and I cried. I even wrote Molly an e-mail to tell her how much her stories moved me. Seattle is lucky that Molly has chosen to call her home. Can't wait to see what is coming next from Molly Wizenberg. Check out Molly's blog (www.orangette.blogspot.com), which is currently on hiatus (read the older posts). She is a gifted writer and her photographs are stunning (even when she's just using her Poloriod).

I love how Coetzee juggles with doubts, self-inflicted misery, fear, and all the humane characteristics and develops them around the main character. Taking place in London the story reveals great details on places in the city. Reading how John makes sense of the alien world, I can also relate some aspects of the novel to my own experience. I give 4 stars for that alone. If you could, read this book before you turn 25!
