My second favorite Salinger novel. I love the Glass family.

May be arrested development, but I didn't come to the Ransome books until my 50s. Visiting Coniston I picked up a copy of Swallows & Amazons. After that I just had to read the rest.

Amazing breadth of character and voice. The plots of the sections became a bit redundant for me, though--eventually, the zombies always show up and people become inhumane. Still, given the inevitability of the plot points, the aspects of society/humanity the book covers are pretty astounding. If you like intense, survivalist narratives, you'll probably like this. It really didn't feel like genre fiction to me at all--but then, most good genre fiction doesn't.

Polly Plat is a Gem! Great insights into the French, that I should've learned years ago, And the 10 magic words, after "Bonjour, monsieur/madame" = "Excusez-moi de vous deranger, mais j'ai un problem" Always say hello & goodbye, and word-for-word (Humbly) Excuse me for disturbing you..but I have a problem. Done well, even slightly exaggerated, if you can pique their interest, they'll go out of their way to help. And believe it or not, Don't SMILE, unless you are flirting... Amazing insights. Page 108 on the power of papal interdiction "going to Canossa" reverberates still.

This was everything I wanted it to be. Susanna Clarke did a fantastic job of bringing the world 19th Century England to life. As a life-long fan of Jane Austen, I feel most at home reading about this time period. And Clarke use of language and attention to detail was right on target. I really enjoyed the characters and the storyline. And although it was a hefty book... there were only a few times where the story lagged. Having read Clarke's first novel, I can't wait to read more of her!!

My son suggested the characters in my Somalia story should be more familiar with the language and ideas of holy war, so I set about educating myself on the topic. All I can say about this book is "Wow!" I read and took notes, then re-read and took notes again, then I read and began to comprehend. The information in the book enabled me to flesh out my Somali characters emotionally because of the context in which they are forced to live. Very readable, very informative, and very helpful.

Any poem about epic tasks like killing dragons and fending off the wooing attempts of a cheating and beautiful princess just makes life better. Makes hair grow on your chest. Makes you wish you carried an axe at all times. Etc. Read it in high school and didn't love it. Read it in college and it clicked.

I love Jane. If you think she just wrote chick lit, think again. These books are so much more than that.
