I think it's safe to say all of Kelly Hunter's books are five star classics for me. I like that Danielle in her review describes the nuance in this book. Hunter writes with economy, but every word is laden with depth, and that's what makes the story and characters leap off the page. The first time I read one of her books I was overwhelmed – it read like a literary novel, like poetry. I don't say that to demean either genre, but it's just so rare that I've read a romance written so well. What works is in what isn't explicitly said. Hunter vividly and sincerely paints flawed but relatable characters in all colourful relationships. I especially like the metaphorical imagery she sometimes employs as a plot device, as with her visual artist heroine in this book. And I know I've just rambled on quite generally, but trust me on this – this is a book you will love to love!

Once you can get past the author's arrogance and obsession with the phrase "pound of flesh," it's an easy read that puts some disturbing events in a greater context of American empirialism, confirming all of my dad's suspicions....ever.

This book is a fictionalization of Frank Lloyd Wright's extramarital affair with his "soulmate," Mamah Cheney, but I don't think it affected me the way it was intended to -- I just couldn't muster the sympathy for Mamah that I think the author was trying to elicit. Intellectually I appreciate the era's contraints upon an intelligent, gifted woman such as Mamah, but (spoiler alert) every time she lamented leaving her young children for Wright, or emoted about missing them, I just got impatient because her self-justification (or the author's attempt at it) didn't convince me.

umm, how depressing is this book? I didn't mind the short story style format but the characters were so rough and many unlikeable :-( Not my kind of book for sure, picked it because of it's Pulitzer prize status.

Good GRIEF, there's so much text in this book! The plodding detail (to the level of how the clutch helps the train go) puts me to sleep, and it's too long for a pre-bed book, but man, does Henry adore it. I wish he could read it to himself.

is there a play more dated than one featuring 12 white males on one jury? in a somewhat related story, this was the first play i ever read through during my drama class. and yes, i went to a mostly white, all boys high school.
