Another reread which did not stand up quite as well although I am still glad Aneesa recommended it. This time through I felt more like Joyce J was manufacturing a story where there with binaries of gender, accomplishment, attention, and worthiness and it felt less credible. She was always chasing adventure while at the same time pushing it away. I know this is part of the point but it seemed like this recounting was another way to chase importance/authenticity/credibility. In my 20s I related but in my 30s ...I buy it less. Life, love and art are more complicated than portrayed here although there were still moments that I loved.

It's not often I feel lukewarm about anything by PKD. The main idea of Counter-Clock World is that time has begun to run backwards and dead people are coming back from the grave. A major religious leader is about to be reborn and the social consequences are huge. We meet the police officers, the bureaucrats, and the morgue workers in a future where goodbye has replaced hello and the expression "full of shit" has become "full of food". Dick was always good at making crazy concepts believable but this just doesn't make any sense. The characters and storyline are a bit of a mess as well.. I still don't understand why that girl was so afraid of going to the library? I had to skim through the second half. If you're new to PKD, some of his best novels are Ubik, Time Out of Joint and Flow My Tears the Policeman Said.

I'm going to admit that I pulled a no-no and saw the movie first; it was awe inspiring and breathtaking and I assumed the book would be that way too. I was disappointed to find that it was an extremely impersonal and long essay format detailing the events of Christopher McCandless as well as a few others who underwent similar events. To me, it undermined the true story of McCandless. It taught me a lesson for my own writing though; if I am going to write a memoir about someone else, I would make it flow more like a novel and make the characters feel as strongly about the book as they did about a movie (real or envisioned).

the life of the Gosselins, and how they are surviving life with twins and sextuplets. not really any new info from what i've seen on their TV show but it was still a fun, quick read. Kate might be anal and controlling but she is a REAL person without a doubt.

A slightly different take on the classic Pride and Prejudice. What if Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennett met BEFORE the ball at Netherfield? In this adventure they meet on a voyage, sailing for America, and their fates become inexplicably intertwined. I found this book an enjoyable read. I admit that I was sometimes disappointed in the decidedly "un-Austen-like" prose, but I found the re-imagination of the events of Pride and Prejudice to be fabulous fun. I always enjoy when authors take well known works of art and spin them on their heads.
