I only read the first novel. How can one not love Maisie. Not much of a mystery, but a great character. A large part of the book, probaby half, is generating a background for Miss Dobbs and the other great characters. Loved the book.

This book is everything everyone said it was --tale of three Jewish Hungarian brothers who pursue education "away" and then return to Hungary, starting in 1937--and more. The writing is engaging, and the story compelling: one wants to keep on reading, and when the story (in the book) ends, one wants it to keep on going. As great books should, l learned --about architecture, about ballet, about set construction, about Hungary -- and I thought --how do you know when it's time to leave? how do you know that you can survive? how do you know what will truly happen in your own country? how do you live beyond all the terror-- and I have been recommending this book to everyone. This might be a better, but also difficult, book for HS students to read about the Holocaust than others. Tracking down or corroborating information about Hungarian Jewish life, and Hungary's participation in WWII, might cast a different (but still dark, compelling, difficult) light on the Holocaust. The story is different, and the same, than what one thinks they know.

Entertaining concept but so many of the stories were odd and then very quick to end in the most bizarre ways. Would be curious to check out the second one, that is mentioned at the back of the book, when it comes out but overall this one was too odd for me to love.
