This is one of the books I read my senior year of high school which really turned me on to reading in general, and the short story in particular. Borges' short fiction is as near perfect, clever and imaginative as could possibly be; his realization of the impossibility of being unique in any true sense of the word is the source of this strength of a writer. I say this because since he takes that premise in hand, he has no fear as a writer tackling questions of infinity, eternal life, the meaning of dreams, etc.

Stopped halfway through as I was getting absolutely nowhere. Had to re-read several passages and had to keep notes on characters/locations etc, was all over the place!

Well, this is what you'd expect, I guess, if what you expect is Pride and Prejudice with zombies pretty seemlessly added to the story. It does get a bit precious at times, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the conceit, and am eagerly looking forward to "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter," rumored to be Grahame-Smith's next book.

Fantastic adventure. Much better than I thought it would be.

The best Grisham book ever. Hard to read the first chapter, but once you're through that it's awesome. Written before Grisham sold out to sell books.

Meh. It was great that it took place in familar surroundings but the story wasn't great.

This book was fun and fast to read. The characters are one-dimensional and the plot is entirely predictable. Even with those strikes against it this was a decent book. I don't regret reading it.

As a series these books are incredible. The formulaic plot that is repeated in every book satisfies the child who is being read to's expectation of what's going on, right and wrong and the band of simple characters. Where the books become really clever is the additional bits of plot woven into the anecdotes, dedications and acknowledgments, written for the older reader, whether parents reading aloud or older children. The humour is clever, beautifully insightful and infinitely quotable. Type Lemony Snicket quotes into any search engine and you will receive a barrage of hilarious snippets which readers of any age can appreciate. The beautiful sense of innocence is what I love about the books as well as the introduction of long words and the imaginative anecdotes to which they pertain. Although the actual definition of the words is sometimes glossed over, I assume the intention is to entertain the older readers and intrigue the younger ones into asking what they mean. Overall Lemony Snicket (real name Daniel Handler) uses the fact that he is writing a book to his advantage more than anyone else I have read. His tone of voice is unique and wonderful. He plays with the words on the page, often inviting readers to skip chapters, find out more, answer questions or search for hidden meanings. In one instance, being unable to describe just how black the tunnel was, he illustrates his point by colouring the next two pages in black ink. His love of books comes through in every sentence often using them as a device to tell between good and evil. "Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them." Lemony Snicket

Mieville is the new Tolkien. There I said it. A faraway land in a fantasy world: check heroes on an epic quest: ummm no a floating pirate city that sends out raiding parties to loot the coastlines for ....books???? Oh, yah. and the Grindylow. Best fantasy villanous race ever! Slimy salamander mages that cross the Swollen Ocean to spit their revenge. And Bellis Coldwine, the cigarillo-smoking linguist who took furtive passage on a ship out of Iron Bay, you were written to be played by Catherine Keener in a movie that ends at The Scar of the world.

I read Dooce.com, though I only started doing so fairly recently. I wasn't sure if I would want to read this book. I am still not sure I should have. Some of the graphic explanation of the realities of having a child, I'm not really sure I'm ready for. I'm glad in a way that I have time to forget. But I know I likely won't. The last few pages of this book are what really made it a worthwhile read, to me. I won't write spoilers (if really you can spoil what is painfully evident from the front cover to the back). But I think sometimes it's important to hear about the breakdown- and more importantly, that there can be life after (and a result of) that breakdown. And vilifying treatment, or any of the other things that get wangsted about where motherhood is concerned (formula v. breastmilk... whatever)... really, everything comes down to what can make a family work. I have a lot to think about from this book. It was educational, but I think not entirely in the ways Armstrong would intend. I am very glad I read it, though I am not sure I enjoyed it.

Bu, romanlarının en iyisiydi ve okuduğum ilk kitaptı. Sonraki birkaç kişi tekrarlayan ve iç karartıcı oldu, bu yüzden bu yazarı daha fazla ikna etmedim.
