Derivative. This book is very "Janet Evanovich" like. If you like Evanovich's Stephanie Plum you'll probably like this one. It was OK but...I won't read another in this series unless I can't find ANYTHING else to read. It is a good book for vacation or plane ride.

My teacher friends who teach upper elementary: if you haven't read this book get it and try it. Not only is a classic it's just a great mystery. I just reread it and it is awesome. I will be doing this for book club at the library.

This is the story of a very complex family, American mother Pakistani father. The nonconventional american mother is kidnapped and held hostage by a Pakistani military supported terrorist group. Her son, raised in Pakistan and Afghanistan now in the American special forces, conceives a plan to rescue her. Very interesting ideas and concepts are explored in this book and yet at core it remains a great action/adventure novel. Did not think I would like this book and was very pleasantly surprized. Provoked many new thoughts about the middle East and the conflict there.

Conroy, is one of my favorite authors ("The Prince of Tides," "The Water is Wide," "The Great Santini," "The Lords of Discipline" all of which I *thoroughly* enjoyed) but he disappointed me with this one. It just dragged on forever--768 pages--& seemed like a rehash of all his other Southern novels. Everyone should read Conroy, but this should nor be the first.

Unfortunately I am very disappointed by this book which reads like an almost 300 page traffic report... truly... an account of who visited whom, at which palace, who joined and left the party, who was absent, where the different people went to when the party dismantled... very dull. The excerpts from diaries and letters are tiny snippets that have not been used well and do not liven up what is mostly a history of the never ending movements of the various royal families of Europe. Many of the paragraphs contain sentences that have no relation to each other, many times I thought a good point or interesting piece of information was about to be divulged only to find the next sentence was on a completely different subject! For example a paragraph which told of Xenia growing alarmingly thin and of the family concern for her... is finished by saying a certain person visited her.... one thinks ah, here comes an opinion by this person on Xenia's health or a revelation of fact... but no... the authors simply wanted to tell us this person visited... it had nothing to do with the rest of the paragraph at all! I am a frequent reader of non fiction and history books, I am accustomed to reading even the most difficult of this genre, and can say that this is not a difficult read (except for the obstacle of boredom), its just not a very interesting one. A shame since I think the Imperial family had fascinating lives.

This book tells some intesting stories which happened in the first half of last century. Something imaginative or amazing happened in these stories. For instance, in the first story, a man can control everything with his mind. He was surpriseed by himself at the beginning and showed his super power to others. However, abuse made everything worse and worse. So the last thing he did with his super power was letting it disappear. These stories ended in a silent voice, which seemed not to happen before. As I read this book, I find that the authors of this book were all living in the period which industy made the whole society develop in a unprecedented speed. The wealth increased very fast in that period, and these stories showed how people pursued money. I think only by hard work, we can get want we want.

This book was well done and really gave a background on both Hepburns and Tracy's lives - but Spencer Tracy was a dog and Katherine Hepburn must have had her own issues to tolerate his garbage for so many years!
