A solid new installment in the The Hollows series. While I would not recommend this as a place to start (new readers should really begin with the first book, Dead Witch Walking, or they will be hopelessly lost), author Kim Harrison has managed to show us new sides to some of her characters through the trials and tribulations of a cross-country road trip, complete with Milk Duds, pixies, questionable motels, and Las Vegas. This is all, of course, only part of the story. Can't forget the soul-eating demon unleashed when a landmark is destroyed, or the looming witch trial. Good times. Main character Rachel Morgan doesn't really grow or change herself, but the glimpses we get into Trent, Al, Newt, and even Jenks when they are dropped into new situations are surprising and interesting. While this series lagged a bit near the middle, it has been picking up lately and book #9 makes me want to find out what happens in book #10!

I don't know why I liked it. But I did. It dragged on...but it stuck with me. There was something beautiful and yet troubling at the same time about Ka's compulsive misery and how he chooses it. I know some people like that...so it sorta connected.

Ok, I really hate it when books of a trilogy are written just for the purpose of you reading and purchasing the next one. This whole book was a filler. The beginning started with the ending and the ending gave you no answers. Just for that reason I will not read the next one. This book is totally bogus!! p.s. ok, I just might read the next one.

This was a great little 80-page novella. I was a bit nervous because I quit "Daisy Miller" in disgust about halfway through back in high school and have not picked up a Henry James novel since, but the Venetian setting and intriguing plot did much to help this one. The main character, a literary scholar/critic, goes to Venice in the 1880s to find the still-living former lover of a well-known 1820s poet in order to try to get his hands on the old lady's letters and papers related to the poet. A bit slow through the middle, but was satisfying airplane reading.

I read Shanghai Girls and this is the sequel. Both books were entertaining to read and informative about China during Mao's leadership, in an historical fiction kind of way.

I FLEW through this book -- partly because I read it the last weekend before 2nd year of teaching ended, and was STARVED for pleasure reading. But also because the story is fascinating. Imagine a cross between an Oliver Sacks patient and Patrick O'Brien's Master & Commander, and you've got James Holman - aka The Blind Traveler. This guy went blind at age 25, and yet still managed to travel independently and 'see' the world (though he is quoted as having said "I see better with my feet".) Holman logged a quarter of a million miles of journeying, including a circumnavigation of the globe and a trip into the Siberian wilderness. Great story -- and great history!
