With this book McCarthy removed a lot of the color, if not the poetry, from his language. Suprisingly, this does not make No Country For Old Men any less vivid of an experience than his strongest work Blood Meridian. In fact the dialogue and the pacing, much stronger and certainly clearer than the other McCarthy novels I've read, make for a more arresting experience, if not as intense an image. The tragedy of the novel is pure. Everyone's screwed, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Sherrif Bell is as doomed as Llewelyn Moss. I've never been quite sure of McCarthy's worldview, but the violence in his books is nothing if not super-realistic. The insane and horrifying randomness of death is made clear, as in no other writer's work - that I've read anyway. In the end all hope is lost and the only sane option is to run away, to quit and stay at home safe with your woman. Not exactly beach reading. The only major flaw I see is Chigurh lack of clear motivation. Maybe that's the story McCarthy's telling - there's no logical source of all this mayhem. It just is.

Little gems, little wonders, little injuries, little joys - moments in the life of a child, of a young man, without sentiment or illusion. Written perhaps more conventionally than his novels, but just as vivid and charming; just as human. Definitely leaves one wanting more.

This guy's message is so subtle: Africans are depraved/we are all depraved/since I don't care about black people I'm going to let them serve as a metaphor for the depravity of human existence/I like writing sentences that yawn with the utter boredom of pretension, pomp, and waste/I have no heart/that's why I had to put the word heart in the title, etc, etc, etc. Where's the negative one million stars option, again?

I read this book a long time ago, so I don't remember it much. I remember that it was good, and that I liked it. I want to read it again.

Started it on the bus home tonight and half way through. So far it's a fun read. Ms. Washburn seems to hit her stride in this one. MUCH better than book 1 and book 1 wasn't bad at all. I hope this series runs for a long time and a lotto books.

while asking my bff (and fellow avowed feminist) if she had ever read this, she commented "i couldnt get past the cover." while the author is obviously not directly responsible for the imagery, i'm also kind of surprised by the art. naked midriff/hip? what gives? anyway, i read this book because i do like feministing.com and wanted to see what i would get out of this book. turns out, not much. while i think it does a good job of giving younger women an overview of feminism, i HATED the writing style. it was so conversational, full of cursing, and just plain annoying that it made it hard for me to cull a message out of it. when i read a book, i expect a modicum of correct english, formality, etc. and this just didn't have it. in that way, i feel like it discredits the message by not presenting it as anything other than a friend telling a friend 'this is fucking cool, i know, right?" part of me is surprised it got published. it also gets too into the 'this happened to me, so it is right' mentality that i don't think is relevant to the feminist movement as a whole. i know that a lot of times womens studies can verge on group therapy and personal confessions, but this was too much. i don't need to know how great valenti's sex life is, i just need to know that there are options out there, and that the more i learn about myself sexually, the more fulfilling my sex life will be. end of story. i don't need to know about the time she wore a sweater to meet prez clinton and everyone talked about her boobs on the internet. don't care, nor does it help me shape my feminist viewpoint by reading about it. the book could have been worse, i suppose, but if i knew a younger woman who was becoming interested in learning more about feminism, this is NOT the book i would recommend. in my opinion, there are too many other relatable, WELL-WRITTEN books out there that this one can't touch.

I read this book as part of a project for developing a restorative practices discipline ploicy in a a local high school. The book gives a good overview of RP and how to apply in an educational setting.

The Sweet Far Thing follows Gemma Doyle as she struggles to bind the magic to restore the realms, and to figure out where she fits in in the real world. Libba Bray takes the reader a bit deeper into both of Gemma's worlds in this final installment in the trilogy, and once again it makes for a great read. The book's strongest part comes toward the very end, when the pressures of both worlds close in on Gemma and she finally has to make some decisions and take action as both a priestess and a society lady. Although I did find myself slogging through bits in the middle of the book, which rambled and was in need of good editing at times, the pace of the last 200 pages or so made up for the earlier rough patches. Overall, Gemma's story is about learning to find your voice, your self, and your inner power, and the strength it takes to be true to any of it. I wish Gemma had been around when I was a teen, myself, as I'm sure she becomes a hero to any lady lucky enough to read her at just the right time in life.
