First I'de like to say that I love Max and Ceecee, and I love the whole premise of a traumatized cop falling for her badboy mobster who just happens to be something other who is also traumatized. To make that storyline even better we throw in that is takes place in New Orleans and our couple has a "past" where the hero saved the heroine during the worst of her life. I was so very glad to see that there was going to be a fourth book to this series featuring them and that we would continue to see them in the future. That being said..... why in the world can't they just be happy together? Seriously, I figured after the crap they went through the last book that the angst would be over and they would be content. BUT NO. There was this back and forth, push and pull throughout the whole of this story where I actually wondered if they were going to make it. I wonder if it's just me or are there other readers out there who wanted a more definite happy ending. To me the bad guy ended up being Alain, not the man kidnapping all the woman whom they were looking for. Alain is a douchbag who will never be redeemed in my eyes even if the author tries to further on in this series. Total and complete asshat. I have a feeling he will pop up later but here's to hoping he bites it in the future.

With all the violence, crime and wretchedness, I'm almost ashamed to say I loved this book. But it grabs you. Never have 900 plus pages gone by so quickly. This is the only book I've read by Gregory David Roberts, but I think it's his life's work. From reading his bio, it seems he's drawn on plenty of his personal experiences. His depictions of Mumbai and India are incredible. His characters are so real - often funny and very soulful. The moods of this book will amaze you.

This is supposed to be a story of riding a bike from the Pacific to the Atlantic, but it turns out to be pages and pages of ego massaging vanity. Initially I was excited about this book because it was a bike journey with a back story. Instead of just learning about how far the author rode and what he ate, we find our way into his thoughts. Sadly, Brian's thoughts are not very enlightening. He struggles to impress his father, understand his past and present relationships, and come to terms with religion. He is so caught up in his reflections that he doesn't see anything else around him. The joys and adventures of his trip are lost. He concentrates on the finish line so much that he doesn't explore or experience any of the in-between. Brian expects to find enlightenment on his journey, but his mind spirals around the same ideas indefinitely. The book tediously goes on for 50 pages after he gets to the Atlantic. In other words, Boy needs to get over himself, talk to his dad, and dump that frigid bitch he calls a girlfriend. Like someone would really say he has nice legs? Look at his picture. Author's need to quit putting their damn pictures at the end of books, I don't need to see their sorry, ugly asses. I would not recommend this book to a friend.

Simply brilliant. Some reviews have compared called Detective Kubu a male 'Ma Ramotswe'. THat does this fabulous character a disservice. I liked the Ladies' Detective Agency series but this is in a different class.
