The Strain: Book One of the Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro I absolutely LOVED Pan's Labyrinth and could not wait to read this book. I couldn't imagine a better pairing than Guillermo Del Toro and Vampires! The book is essentially the story of an outbreak that starts on an airplane in NYC and threatens to spread out over the entire world. It is up to a small band of people including 2 CDC agents, a local exterminator and a holocaust survivor to stem the tide of evil spreading through NYC. I remember reading horror stories when I was in my teens. In the 80s and early 90s, vampire books were gritty, creepy and absolutely kept me up at night. Since then, the advent of the kinder, gentler vampire has taken over the book market. Well, Del Toro and Hogan have brought the ruthless, blood hungry vampire back to the forefront and I for one am extremely grateful! The whole book read like a movie script (not surprisingly) and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I am both happy and sad that it was not wrapped up in one book. Happy because there will be more to come and sad because I have to wait! I could totally see this series being made into a TV series with each book being covered in a season. I would watch!!! Being a lover of fairy tales, I especially loved the opening chapter about the legend of the giant, Josef Sardu. ( I reread it a couple of times) Wouldn't it be fantastic if we got a prequel about his life and the "unlife" of the creature that overtook him???
