I'm not sure what I thought of this book. It's twisted, disturbing and pretty much creepy throughout. It kept my attention during the entire story and I couldn't predict anything that was going to happen. It's bizarre and confusing, but in a good way. I can't figure out if Marbury is real or just the strange thoughts of a disturbed kid. I guess, you'll just need to read it for yourself and see what you believe.

The Strain: Book One of the Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro I absolutely LOVED Pan's Labyrinth and could not wait to read this book. I couldn't imagine a better pairing than Guillermo Del Toro and Vampires! The book is essentially the story of an outbreak that starts on an airplane in NYC and threatens to spread out over the entire world. It is up to a small band of people including 2 CDC agents, a local exterminator and a holocaust survivor to stem the tide of evil spreading through NYC. I remember reading horror stories when I was in my teens. In the 80s and early 90s, vampire books were gritty, creepy and absolutely kept me up at night. Since then, the advent of the kinder, gentler vampire has taken over the book market. Well, Del Toro and Hogan have brought the ruthless, blood hungry vampire back to the forefront and I for one am extremely grateful! The whole book read like a movie script (not surprisingly) and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I am both happy and sad that it was not wrapped up in one book. Happy because there will be more to come and sad because I have to wait! I could totally see this series being made into a TV series with each book being covered in a season. I would watch!!! Being a lover of fairy tales, I especially loved the opening chapter about the legend of the giant, Josef Sardu. ( I reread it a couple of times) Wouldn't it be fantastic if we got a prequel about his life and the "unlife" of the creature that overtook him???

A quicker read than I remembered. I could easily see almost all of Moore's books making a clean jump to the movie screen, and I'm kind of surprised that none has yet.
We love these books. We love bellowing these songs at the top of our lungs, and the tunes given are generally familiar to us - Alouette, Pop Goes the Weasel, and so on, although sometimes fitting the words to the melody is a bit of a stretch. There's definitely some potty humor in here, which appeals to most kids. For example, the song about not putting your mouth on the water fountain finishes with "And stop drinking from the toilet by the way!" (That's a weird illustration too - the toilet has a fountain attachment? Is it like a bidet?) One about not picking your nose in public shows a boy picking his friends' noses - they're not too happy about this. And they do make sure to spell out Just What Not To Do - some people are concerned that this encourages bad behavior in and of itself. I disagree. I find that my nieces understand that the examples are over the top and chosen to be funny, not as anything to emulate! I don't object to this at all, I think it's hilarious, but if these things concern you should, as always, read the book before buying.

Very informative. What an interesting history of the founding fathers, Unitarianism in America, and interdisciplinary science!

This book is actually a collection of essays from the New Yorker, and they're very insightful. His arguments mostly stem from his own family's experiences and are naturally just small scenes from which he draws grand conclusions. Like most other authors. However, his awareness of the political scene and the major infighting going on culturally speaks of a very sharp mind. His essays have enough political analysis to show his intelligence, but then will transition into a colorful story about his son. One essay is about Adam Gopnik and his wife's attempts to keep Barney out of his son's life, and it's absurd, but it makes its point. In other words, a lot of it is fanciful, but in a charming almost fin de siecle style that I just adore. If you know anything about French culture, you'll laugh many times. :)

Kitabı henüz gerçekten başlatmadım ... Bir süre önce geri dönüp "Cadıların Keşfi" adlı ilk kitabı tekrar okumak zorunda kaldım. Yine de başlamak için heyecanlıyım!
