This book was not what I expected. In comparison to other titles I've read by Murakami, this was the easiest read and was least suspenseful. And with all of this I still found it an enjoyable book. It was somewhat refreshing to read something from Murakami that was stylistically similar but very different in storyline from other titles.

This is the story of a young King Henry VIII and Queen Katherine of Aragon, told from many points of view. It includes lots of political intrigue, although as usual, I'm not sure of the historical accuracy. The timeline of all the events of busy King Henry's life always get me confused in historical fiction. Maybe historian's don't know for sure, or maybe author's just take liberties. Anyway, I am always fascinated by English history during this time period, so I picked up this book. Also because as a woman, how can I not be sympathetic to Katherine's plight. So this book was going along good and all, and I was listening to it on Audio (playaway) so I couldn't really tell how far along I was. And then suddenly, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, it ended. I was like "WHAT!?!? You're going to end it there?" So for anyone who is reading this book, as opposed to listening to it on a device on which you can't tell how far into the book you are, this book ends sort of abruptly. The book is written in an omniscent third-person POV which I don't really like. Sometimes the head-hopping bothered me a little, but otherwise, I liked the book. The reader did the accents well. I liked hearing some of the early history, since I always hear about things starting from the introduction of Anne Boleyn. I thought this one would go on until the death of Katherine, but it only chronicles her early marriage to Henry. It mentions her childhood and marriage to Henry's brother, but that is not detailed in the book. So a complete picture of Katherine of Aragon this is not. However, I still very much enjoyed it, thought it was well-written and very interesting. A good book, although I wish it had been longer. I would definitely read more historical fiction by Plaidy. Recommended for fans of English history/historical fiction, Henry VIII historians, fans of period pieces.
