SOA Listening Challenge 2011: Pick an audiobook that received a DIK grade at AAR in print format. TBR Challenge 2011. I rarely give 5 star ratings, but I can't really think of a complaint about this book. The writing is clever and witty, and the narration is truly masterful. Since the plot works as a series of vignettes, it is an easy book to put down at the end of a chapter, and that can be both good and bad, I suppose. But toward the end I really didn't want to put it down. I needed to know how Miss Pettigrew's amazing day was going to end. It was wonderful! I've seen the movie and enjoyed it very much, but the book (as is often the case) is even better!

What happens when you piss off an entire governmental body? Well, you draw fire. Which is exactly what happens to Katniss and Peeta. Follows the pacing of the first book, it throws tidbit after tidbit to keep you interested, and a whopper is inserted several times in the second half of the book. Then at the end of it all, something happens to make you want to forge on to the third book. I'm just glad I didn't read it before the entire trilogy was published. I'd've been in a bind. Katniss is like a simmering pot of frustration and anger. I imagine she boils over in the third book. Not your typical protagonist. She heaps too much on herself and believes that nothing can happen without her intervention. At the end of it all, she finds more she thought has been afoot and this makes her angry, instead of maybe relieved, or grateful.

This is a great character study about a rural-Italian town and its inhabitants and how their lives, ambitions, and unavoidable fates are intertwined with the landscape and with eachother. Ammaniti is a tremendously talented linguist and seems to have a great ability to create engaging fiction. I look forward to reading his original hit "I'm Not Scared".

easy fun reading, although the story regarding the appalachian trail is unresolved. Don't go into this book expecting a great hiking story--more a classic gaper tale. If you like Bill Bryson's sarcastic, self- depracating travel writing style, you'll enjoy walk in the woods.

If you're going to get one book by Carlin... make it this one. Fast, funny and random--and if it offends you, loosen up! it's only "language". If you're going to get all of them--get his 3+ book collection 'An Orgy of George' with stuff (or shit) not in the others. Rest in peace George, you will be greatly missed. You were someone I looked up to and helped me laugh to see past the darker times in life.

Picked this book up without knowing much about it -- including that it was intended for young adults. Found the story beautiful, and thought the simplicity of the language added to its impact. Enjoyed reading about Leisel, Hans, Rudy, etc. but was especially captivated when Death was sharing his perspective. Great read.

Good fun story...er...I mean memoir. I don't know, I'm almost convinced I'm an evil librarian. The only real problem I had with the book were the repetitive digressions. Alcatraz was constantly interrupting the story with one-liners that turned into a paragraph long side track. He acknowledged what he was doing, but it was still overdone. He also kept telling us that he is not a hero, he is not a good person. The book probably would've been 20-30 pages shorter if he's edited those parts out. I'll probably read the next one, but admittedly, it will be difficult to recommend it to young impressionable kids when it is so anti-librarian...but if I don't recommend it, I guess that only validates the story...damn. This is a real pickle, huh?

I finished this book wondering what the point was, which I guess was the point, the basic pointlessness of most of the Kansas-Missouri violence even in a Civil War context...nonetheless it's not exactly an ideal feeling to leave a book having. Lydia was an extraordinarily uncomfortable heroine, and despite her exploits seemed to have no real personality - she was just a canvas for events to be imprinted on. Everyone around her had actual convictions about things which made her lack of them pretty unrealistic.
