This was a fun read just as Virgil is a fun character. I liked the local references, especially those to Grand Rapids.

Warning: This is not a romance book. This is not a Sarah Dessen novel, this is not an Elizabeth Scott novel, this is not a Simone Elkeles novel. It is, however, a sweet story of friendship that's a little too generously titled. I gave the book three stars because I really did go in expecting to read something in the vein of the above authors. I don't like being fooled. Overall, I really liked this story. It's a wonderful tale of growing up, and not the growing up that happens when you become a teen, but the growing up and changing that happens during your senior year. I haven't really seen a story like that before so I really liked that. The writing and story telling in this novel are solid. Jenna's character is likable and relatable. I felt like some of her tics should have been more greatly explored though (for example, her stealing and binging). It's not that I wanted to see the cops called on her for stealing a Milky Way, but that I wanted to see her called out on it. I wanted her to realize that stealing food is not a healthy way of dealing with stress. I feel like this story line just kind of lost steam and disappeared in the second third of the book.

You can tell that the authors talent was growing to write The Da Vinci Code

One of the best books I've ever read. Funny, sad, perfect. You fall in love with each character and feel as if you know them all personally. The very end, just preceding Arthur's death, is the most poignant. Arthur's meditations on war very relevant. Many lessons learned throughout the book on a wide range of subjects: war, how God created humans, love, intrigue, desperation, etc. And no, this genre of book is not typically my favorite, but, I must say, this has become one of if not the favorite book I have ever read. Fabulous.

After an asteroid hits the moon, pushing it closer to Earth, the world is disrupted by tsunamis, volcano eruptions, and earthquakes. Food supplies dwindle, electricity is cut off, water supplies are threatened. Suddenly sixteen-year-old Miranda's worries about prom, school, her friends, and her crush are crowded from her mind as she tells how she and her family struggle to survive. This is a fascinating premise and the book pulls it off.

LOVED IT! This is my first introduction to David Sedaris' writing and I after reading this book, I think I have a new addiction! His writing style is such a breeze to read through, I've never finished a book so fast. And as it is in a collected short essays format, one does not have to feel committed to the whole book. To tell the truth, this book had me uncontrollably laughing out loud (much to the annoyance of my husband). Sedaris had a way of making me feel like I was just sitting down with an old pal catching up on their silly stories. This was good for my soul. I recommend it to everyone!

I love having cozy mysteries on Mt Git'r'Read's shelves. They are perfect purse book size, they cheer me up, and they are fast reads. Towards the end of the month, I want to squeeze just one more book on my monthly book journal. This one fit the bill wonderfully. Helen Hawthorne is still on the run from her loser deadbeat ex-husband. He was the one who didn't work and philandered around while she worked her heinie off and stayed true. She caught him in the act with their neighbor (6 books ago) and she took it out on his SUV. The judge had the gall to award the sleaze ex with alimony. Helen hit the trail and has been living in Florida and working a succession of paid under the table jobs to keep a low profile and hide from her ex who is searching her out for what he thinks is rightfully his. Now Helen is working at the Full Moon Hotel as a maid. She just wants to do her back breaking job and go home to her nice boyfriend. Nope, the ex is hot on her trail and shows up at the hotel to look for her. AND she finds a body of a fellow maid in the Dumpster and all hope of anonymity meanders away. There's also a hunt on for $150,000 that was never found after a bank robber stowed away in the hotel six months ago. Bodies, missing money, swindlers.....a good mix for a good cozy mystery. Elaine Viets raises awareness as well as writes a fab book. Reading this one gave me wicked flashbacks when I used to clean rooms when I was in high school and college at a motel in my hometown.....people can be SLOBS! I have huge respect for the profession and make sure I leave tips, pick up my own towels, generally don't leave a mess for these hard working people who clean up after our stay. Do many clean their home each and every day? That's what these folks do many many times a day. A gazillion bathrooms to scrub, a multitude of beds to make, floors to vacuum and mop....you get the idea I feel a little passionate about the subject.
