I adore Jerzy Kosinski's writing style, and it amazes me how he can string together simple words to form beautiful, complex passages. The overall message of the book was fantastic, but I feel that the first half of the novel loses its power as it begins to appear repetitive - boy travels to town, they think he's a gypsy, he's beaten, he works, he eventually leaves for another town. It's an interesting insight into the wartime mind, and investigates the power of belief (and of prejudice), and it's shocking in all of the right places.

I wasn't going to read the book, but once started I couldn't put it down. He had many challenges and trials in his life and weathered them with humility and trust in the Lord. It was inspiring and vastly interesting.

I really thought this would be too darkish and crime in the big city for me, but it wasn't at all. I love how flawed the main characters are and the romance/bromance were both great!

I liked that it didn't have a pat solution. In later years I think Wodehouse made everything very, very tidy and while it was always very satisfying, this ending is more realistic. The heroine discovers that the man she thought was heroic, wasn't. She went from liking him and then didn't like him and in the end his only recourse is to wear her down. I've had this tried on me, in fact.
