I found this a difficult novel to get through. I admit I haven't read much science fiction, but this particular story seemed impossible to connect to. The characters were one-dimensional and the plot was lacking. I made myself read through to the end, which stops midway in the action as a "to be continued". I would not recommend this book!

So I was in the mood to read some fantasy for the first time in years. The bbok started out strong and I was enjoying it, but about 400 or 500 pages in, it began to loose steam. The character lost any charm he had, and became tiresome and redundent. It began to feel like the same old story, even though the author was trying to convince the reader that it was not (which only increased my annoyance). The upside was that it did slake my thirst for fantasy, but I will not be picking up the sequel.

The idea is very inventive and thought-provoking, but overall the book was not everything I thought it would be. The first third was good but the end was a little disappointing. A lot of things were left unresolved or unexplained. Brockmeier's description of the Antarctic and the City was excellent, but the characters were a little flat. If you think of it as a long, "short" story instead of a novel then it's worth the read.

Amateur writing; no sense character development. Repetitive description of characters. You only get to the main plot some 200 pages later. Plots are not sequenced logically with too many loopholes within the storyline.
