I think that my enjoyment of this book would have been a bit more if I had a background in the legal/judicial world. As it is, I still enjoyed it a lot, it's kind of strange that the average citizen (me) knows very little about the process by which the supreme court decides and hands down laws for this country. I'd like to say that I also have a justice-crush on Stevens (go Wildcats!).

I was a bit disappointed with this book. I was so excited when I read the title: "finally" (I thought to myself) "a picture book for girls about princesses who can stand up for themselves!" But this book was a little too sugary-sweet for me. The endings are too neatly happily-ever-after, and in more than one story the princess marries a prince (can't princesses ever be happy with themselves without having a prince around?). There were still good stories in this collection- "Double Dragons" and "The Princess Exchange" were my favorites- but I was left thinking that these stories aren't all that different from traditional princess tales. Girls who love princesses will like this book, but if you're hoping for a feminist take on princess tales, this isn't it.

To antiphrase Jack Flag... I &%^$#ing LOVE cosmic stuff. Generally I have a softer spot for the talking raccoons and trees and Russian space dogs of Guardians of the Galaxy, but the Nova series has a great set of elements too (including, in this case, a little interlude with said Russian space dog. So good). The stakes are cosmically huge, the drama is mixed in with humor, and Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy, really doesn't wear very many clothes. What's not to like?

I've used the characters in this book to explain certain people to other people, something along the lines of, "He's a Sam Hamilton" or "I'll bet he's like Adam's Lee." I once suggested an acquaintance reminded me of Cathy Trask- Brett made me reconsider, suggesting that's probably the worst thing you could say about another human being. I think he's probably right.

I know this book received awards and such, yet I found it to be a little choppy, for lack of a better term. I wish he could have followed one town or several major characters in more detail. Thought it jumped around alot, but that makes sense being it's nonfiction and all. You can't make up stuff people don't tell you.

Review originally posted at www.paranormalchick.com This is Connor and Marielle’s story, and I never miss a Kerrelyn Sparks book. Marielle is an angel, literally. She disobeyed and was cast out of Heaven and separated from the Heavenly Host. She now has the body of a human woman and is discovering how to cope with things she’s never had to do. Like using a toilet. This I found particularly amusing. Connor is a 500 year old vampire who has given up on love. For someone who has had to wait this long he sees no point in it. He gets easily annoyed with all his fellow vamps that keep falling in love. He will be a hard nut to crack for sure. Connor discovers Marielle and he is absolutely stunned by her beauty. He makes it his mission to protect her and help her return to Heaven like she wishes. They have to avoid a demon that is convinced that Marielle is a perfect edition to the fallen angels. The twist is that Marielle was an angel of death. If she touches humans she can kill them instantly. So Connor has to take Marielle away so she doesn’t harm anyone. You can imagine Marielle’s shock when she doesn’t kill Connor. Now just how can you explain to a beautiful angel that you are a vampire and you used to feed off of humans? Somehow they manage and I love all the twists and turns. I can’t wait to see who we get to read about next! Love this series! I was a little disappointed that Connor didn’t get a tougher chick for his mate. Oh well. Maybe the next book will make me happier.

I have to admit that this book wasn't entirely my normal type of read. There's no gritty heroines in leather going against the modern system or angsty love triangles/squares/geometry going on. I'm rather glad of that because otherwise this wouldn't have been such a good read. I really enjoyed the way the book unfolded. We're introduced to our main characters in two ways: in present time and in the past. While this format takes a while to get used to, it's worth it because it helps build up a nice slow tension throughout the book. The main characters are well written and I was pretty glad to see that Lawhead didn't (yet) give into the temptation to throw tons of romantic tension into the book, giving us time to soak in the plot and get introduced to the massive world that he's creating. What really impressed me was how well Lawhead wove the religious angle into the story. Many times the religious angle is either awkwardly inserted into a book or the author browbeats you with the "this book is religious oriented" aspect. You won't find any of that here. By the time you do realize that this is Christian fantasy, you're already well into the book and it all just feels natural to the story line. The only thing that sort of hurts this book is that there's not much here that's particularly new. Almost all of this has been seen elsewhere and while this isn't automatically a bad thing (they're common tropes because they work well in stories), it does mean that Lawhead will have to step things up slightly in the next book in the trilogy. Overall this was a fun read and I'm sure that this will catch on well with a pretty wide audience. As far as how he compares to his father, I have to admit that I've never read anything by either author so I had nothing to compare Ross to. Fans of his father might end up being harsher or more generous than me, but so far I have to admit that I'm pretty curious to see what happens next. It's not my normal read but there's enough here to entice me into Lawhead's next book. (I received an ARC through Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.)

Actually I didn't get to finish it. I was close to the end but have misplaced the book. I wasn't really into it but was at least willing to finish it. Whenever I find it I'll read the last chapter. It was okay. Nothing great. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The only cool thing was the tapestries. Found the book. Finished it today (march 17). Yeah, it had a cute ending but I still wouldn't recommend it.
