My Masters Degree thesis was on this magnificent poem. It is deep, confusing at times, but utterly enjoyable for poetry buffs. But I must warn you, before you start reading this poem, do some research on Walt Whitman. It will help you understand this poem. He is considered the First American Poet.. the father of American Poetry. Look him up, then read the poem. Let's discuss it!

Unwind, to me, is probably the best YA dystopian book ever. I read it in 2010 and it’s one of the few YA books that has stayed relevant and every bit as good as the first time I read it. This books is set in an unspecified future where children below the age of eighteen can be “unwound”. It’s a difficult concept to explain, but simply put, it’s something like organ harvesting. It kind of ensures that your “soul” is split too, but you’re not actually dead. The concept is dealt with pretty clearly in the book, so have no fear. It’s about three kids, Connor, Risa, and Lev, who are to be unwound but end up escaping and then trying to survive in a cruel world. Connor is put up to be unwound by his parents, Risa because she’s a ward of the State and Lev because he’s a child who has been specifically conceived and raised for the very purpose of unwinding. What I really like about the book is that it combines several of my favourite themes: runaway children, militia groups, a dash of romance, etc. It’s a brilliantly executed novel and well-paced, which ensures that you’re never bored. It stays with you long after you’re done with it and makes you want to pursue this dystopian genre mercilessly, looking for another gem. Truth is, I haven’t found any book that really matches up to Unwind. It’s kind of spoiled me for life. There’s a sequel, called “Unwholly” which is out, so be sure to check that out as well. But that’s the thing. You don’t really need to pursue the sequel because Unwind works as a great standalone by itself.

interesting topic. a little drawn out, but good to read if you feel author loyalty, which i usually do.

كتاب رائع، لغته سهله، يمكن الإنتهاء منه بجلسه واحده.. لكنه لم يزودني بكل المعلومات التي كنت أريد معرفتها أكثر عن عالم الملائكة!

Much of the writing is beautiful in this novel, and I loved the idea and mythos that the author created in this world, blending the afterlife with earthly life at the historical time. There were parts of the novel that felt unresolved when I turned the last page, however, including the conflict with the lost souls, as well as the romance between Calder and Ana. Overall I felt left with too many questions at the end of this novel.
There's not a whole lot that's new here, but it's a pretty solid observation of Batman vs. The Joker in a short amount of time. The collected three issues articulate Batman's weakness for The Joker and why Batman keeps The Joker alive instead of just killing him (which, at some point, everyone wonders why Batman lets him live). In fact, at times, it feels like Smith's musing on Moore's The Killing Joke. The philosophy of The Joker was explained near-perfect in the movie The Dark Knight, but The Joker explains why he is to Batman what he is pretty effectively by Smith. Three things I really dug: - Batman's long talk with The Joker doesn't bring out a new side to either, but it does boast rare qualities in each character. This includes one of the only moments that The Joker seems legitimately honest and Batman acknowledging his weakness for treating villains like sympathetic characters. - Onomatopoeia. The dude's a sweet villain. For a character that is named after a literary device, he turned out really, really good. Just saying sounds could become dumb right quick, but it's weird, uncomfortable and eerie in the best way. Less is more for right now, but he needs more to survive as a villain in the future. Stoked. - The Joker reads The Fountainhead throughout. Nice.
