AMAZING book...you have to read this. In the early 1940s, Jewish men, women, and children are taken from their homes in Paris and eventually put to their death in the gas chambers. This is a beautiful story about the love of a sister for her brother, and the determination of a journalist to tell the truth.

Great way to learn about Caravaggio and heartening to see that masterpieces can still be discovered - by grad students no less. Harr is no "Ross King" but this is a good book and I learned a lot about Caravaggio.

Imagine Mrs.Dalloway set in a pancake house with a huge group of psychiatrists. The main character philosophizes and rants and stream-of-consciousness prevails. Sounds boring and lame, but it's hilarious. Very deadpan and over-analytical, which I appreciate.

This is the most beautiful book I have ever read. It's one of those rare books that has changed me for having read it and has stayed with me in such profound and unexpected ways. FORGOTTEN COUNTRY tackles themes of love, loss, familial bonds and loyalty, immigration and the ways in which "home" can both hold and betray us, and the human capacity to rise and to heal-- with boundless grace, stunning precision, hauntingly gorgeous imagery, and a quiet ferocity that will break your heart. Luminous, insightful, poetic, and absolutely unforgettable, FORGOTTEN COUNTRY should be on everyone's To-Read list! I am so grateful for having read it, and will no doubt return to it for the rest of my life.

It's a cute story. It adds some details to the story that I like. It was a little slow moving and there wasn't a major conflict. It's a great easy read.

Just reread this and can't believe I had forgotten how bleakly it ended. This time through, I kept hearing the male author behind the female voice of the main character. And this time, like last, I kept stewing about GoodNews. He's fictional, yeah, but what about those cures? "All I need to do is quell the doubt and skepticism that make me human." It's still amazing, funny, sad.

I won an ARC of this book from Goodreads. It was a little "soap opera"-y at times, but overall was okay. Is there going to be a sequel to it? I feel like Shanice Williams (the author) definitely sets it up for one. I would probably read it, just to see what happens to Kane and Suranne in the future.

Good read. Rachel and I took turns reading and discussing this as we travelled to/through/back from our trip to Pacific Northwest. As someone who has endured the pressure to conform in the "surburban wife/mom/female" cat arena whilst staying true to myself, I identified with the author's frank observations of this coiffed culture. I liked how she kept introducing new characters throughout the book in a way that continued to add layers of complexity to the evolution of the human spirit.
