Slowly, O'Farrell reveals how characters in two stories are inevitably intertwined. In the 1950's, 21 yr. old Lexie runs away from a restrictive family home in rural Devon to a new life in Soho where she attains friendships and love and develops talents. Flash forward to Elina & Ted in contemporary London where each struggles to capture puzzling memories. I agree with The Guardian reviewer who said, "O'Farrell has a remarkable ability to convey the texture of human emotion with precision. In The Hand That First Held Mine, she also demonstrates a masterful gift for storytelling."

I bought this because John Ashberry put it on the reading list for a poetry workshop. Why? Because he loved Stein's language, and thought poetys could learn something from it. At the end of the workshop, he admited that he'd never made it all the way through it either.

Postsecret is sweet! Reading through these books reminded me of how similar the human experience can be. Also, peoples' creativity never ceases to amaze.

High quality short stories of the fantasy/sci-fi type, sort of. Added bonus if you've read American Gods beforehand.

Overall it was an interesting story to say the least. It covers Darcy's relationship with his sister and relations well. I enjoyed the family interactions very much. The rest of the story was interesting. It felt a bit too much like a mystery novel at some points with all the events going on. I have to say my favorite part occurs when Georgiana eventually pries details about Elizabeth from the reluctant Darcy. Sadly I can't find much more to say about it other than that. The new characters introduced in the latter half of the book aren't very memorable. Mostly I found myself wishing I could get through the book and get on to the next where Darcy finally starts working on getting the girl!
