Absolutely loved it! No vampires, werewolves or shape shifters just a character driven novel full of family secrets.

This was a good book George. It was a short book and it was a nice and descriptive book and I wanted to hug it and squeeze it and pet it until its head popped off.

I actually do read normal books...this was very good! Modern day To Kill a Mockingbird!

a beautiful novel with a thousand layers to pull apart and dissect. a murder mystery, a work of art, a doomed love story. images that'll stay with you (unfortunately -- there's one that involves eyes and sharp objects that i wish i could excise from my BRAIN). My Name Is Red proves that the praise heaped upon pamuk isn't at all misplaced.

I am three weeks away from graduating college and I still have this book in my room. (and make my friends read it)

Escape from all of the teen vampire novels and into the arms of this stunning zombie novel. Mary lives in a village surrounded by fences that are the only thing that keep the Unconsecrated out. Every day they swarm the fences, trying to get in and feast on the living. Anyone bitten by them turns into a zombie. Recently, Mary’s father disappeared into the surrounding forest and never returned. Her mother goes to the fences to see if she can see him in the throng of zombies. One day her mother goes to the fence alone and is bitten. Mary has to choose whether she should be killed outright or turned outside the fences to join the zombies there. She decides to allow her mother to exit the village, a decision her brother refuses to forgive her for. Mary has two choices as a teen girl in her village. She can marry and continue the human race or join the Sisterhood, a church group that rules the village. But she is satisfied with neither choice. Could there be a third? I found this book absolutely gripping while reading. The tension of the village existing by itself surrounded by forest and zombies, the absolute power of the Sisterhood, the strain of families constantly losing people to the Unconsecrated, and the tension of Mary trying to fit in but not be overcome by the society she lives in. Ryan’s writing is thrilling, bloody and unflinching. She has created a zombie book that embraces the zombie traditions of blood-thirst and refusal to quit. It is a joy to see a book so fresh based on such long-standing traditions. After finishing the book, I was a little less happy. I found a real lack of answers about this world we found ourselves in. I didn’t mind the abrupt ending, but I did think that the world itself needed to be fleshed out more and that without some insight into the world it seemed very incomplete. I will be eager to read subsequent books to see if answers appear, but at this point I am concerned that the thrilling action has overtaken the world building. I also was confused by Mary’s utter desire for one boy and then her turning away from him when they were finally together only to turn back when faced with losing him. It made me question this character’s strength and judgment. I wouldn’t have minded if there was some reason given for the inconsistency, but there was nothing. Despite my quibbles, teens will adore this book. Who could ask for more than zombies, gore and true love? Appropriate for ages 14-17.

This is the first book of Hemingway's that I have ever read. Really, my only knowledge of him comes from having read The Paris Wife (which I realize is a work of fiction) and subsequent research. I picked this book up out of curiosity to get his view of things and that era of his life, and I thought it was interesting. Some chapters interested me more than others. The Pilot Fish and the Rich was such a vivid and heartbreaking portrait of an affair. There is no doubt he was a great writer, tortured and flawed as he was.

This book took me a while to read but I did enjoy it. While the authors style is somewhat hard to get into, I liked it alot. I just needed long stretches of time to sit down with the book so I could rightfully get into it. It is about a woman who figures out that a drug for TB that is being trialed in Africa has been fasttracked and is causing people to die. Her husband takes up the cause after she is brutally murdered.

Menolly really comes into her own in this book and you can't help rooting for her along the way. Still one of my favorite Pern books.

'read' it on audiobook -- a mammoth two-part set of 34 CDs (great narrator, by the way) from the Mountain View Public Library (excellent selection of nonfiction audiobooks, incidentally). It's a great way to learn about the period and about Lincoln -- lots of villains (damn you, McClelland!) and unlikely heroes, and surprising transformations (e.g., of Stanton from a total asshole to Lincoln's most loyal and valuable friend and cabinet member.) Warning: the whole time I was immersed in it, I found myself weirdly compelled to bring it up all the time because of the fact that it always felt relevant to whatever my friends and I were talking about at the time -- not just current political affairs, but also more mundane things like departmental gossip, and pretty much any individual or group decision-making process ... to this day I'm not sure whether the travails of the Lincoln administration in deciding whether/how to undertake various military campaigns really is eerily reminiscent of the way my housemates and I tackle the utility bills, or whether Doris Kearns Goodwin was just extremely successful at taking over my mind.
