Turkle has an excellent voice for academic reading. For this book, the content is more important than the composition, though. The first half of the book discusses robotics, particularly our relationships with robots and how they are expected to be used in the future. Presently, a significant train of thought is that robots will be caretakers for the very young and very old. A question asked by a 4th grader in the book basically summarizes my thoughts - don't we have people for that? The second half of the book discusses our connections with one another through the technology- be it texting, Facebook, or internet chats and gaming. Essentially, it is easy to be addicted and completely unsatisfied. My summation of the experience of many the author interviewed is that connecting with people via these means is like eating fat-free chocolate pudding when you really wanted the lava cake. You have to eat a lot more, and it still isn't what you're looking for. Both sections of the book were wonderfully thought provoking, and are leading me to further reflect on how I utilize the technologh that is available to me.

Definitely thought I'd be giving this book a 5 stars. But I don't know, something stopped me. I liked it, it was well written, the author captures the voice of the three distinct characters very well, exceptionally well in the case of Aibileen but I didn't love this, I probably won't re-read this for pleasure (but will teach it as text at some point in class) The ending is unsatisfying, I think that is what I didn't like... I know the ending rings true for these characters in some way but I would have loved a glimpse into the future for at least one of them. Having that said, the tone of the book is pitch perfect, the simmering heat of Jackson is palpable throughout, you really feel the danger of the time and the place and I think that is what gives it the 4th star for me. If this hadn't been so well written this would be a 3 star review.
Good story. I'm very interested in what happens next. I enjoyed how the story is told from both perspectives. It was a good solid story. The one thing that bugged me was how obvious the finn/giles scenario was.

I enjoyed this book - it's another one of these "wife" books like "American Wife" (truly amazing) and "Ahab's Wife," about the point of view of women married to famous men. I didn't know much about Hemingway's youth or his first marriage, so it was interesting to see the groundwork being laid for both his future success and future destruction. I also thought of "Midnight in Paris" although that version of Hemingway, Scott and Zelda was much more fun.

I was expecting more from the author of the hilarious Bad Kitty. The only reason I finished was this because I did want to know who tried to kill Jane, but the bored, wealthy kids-who-have-no responsibilities-but-need-some really grated on me.
