Un libro muy interesante, de fácil lectura, con un enorme poder para introducirte a la trama.
Not quite as hysterical as David Sedaris, but pretty darn good in his own right, provided you can handle a hefty dose of sarcasm and cynicism. I can, and I quite liked it. He wrote about some very interesting and varied topics.

As posted in [http://www.amazon.com]: I'm sorry but I really do not see what was special in Martinez' *Parrot in the Oven* that reaped him some awards. I did not see anything special about the story. However, I do agree that Martinez does have a way with words. They were eye-catching and made you wonder. *Parrot in the Oven* is divided into chapters that each one focuses on one particular topic. While there is a subtle storyline throughout, the overall picture is blurred. There's that "missing link" that prevents you from knowing each characters in the book. Simply, there's no depth other than with Manny. The book is told from Manny's perspectives. His dad has lost his job. He simply goes to the local pool hall and spends whatever money he can find and gets drunk. The mother is constantly cleaning the house. His older brother is never home and constantly has a new job. His older sister is secretive. His baby sister is simply a brat. Manny tells his experiences with school, White people, boxing, and the gang. Most of all, he tells how these experiences impact his family and their world-view. *Parrot in the Oven* is an alright book. It's nothing that you'd go around and recommend this book to friends. Just simply ok. The only best thing is Martinez' ways with words.

I absolutely adored this book for so many reasons. First of all was the writing which I thought to be excellent portraying the story of Hadley, Ernest Hemmingway's first wife. The setting of the 1920's Paris scene was presented in all its "glorified" form, and the world of excesses and outrageous behavior was vividly portrayed. Against this backdrop of hedonism, we meet the Heminyways before fame and fortune were to strike. They are so much in love and lead a type of wanderlust existence through the "in" spots of Europe. Excessive drinking and partying was the rule and both Hadley and Ernest rub elbows with the glitterati of the day including Gertrude Stein, the Fitzgeralds, the Maddoxes etc. All of their friends were of the artistic bohemian mind where morales seemed to be in short supply and where everyone seemed to be dedicated to their own egos. Ernest certainly was a bigger than life character and Hadley loved him truly while understanding his many faults and indiscretions. She, being nine years older than he, was able in the five years of their marriage to bring about and nestle that talent that many have thought to be brilliance. Both of them were children of very hard determined mothers so were naturally drawn to each other as they searched for that happy medium of finding themselves. Sad and tragic and never really falling out of love, these two found themselves separated by a good friend who carries on a torrid affair with Ernest while being a friend to Hadley. It was all very civil as they traveled in threes all the time knowing of the relations between them all. In the end, I could not help but feel that Ernest would have been much better off staying with Hadley. She went on to making her own life and seemed to be happy at its conclusion. A great book about a great American author and his very beginnings, one could not help but think of that phrase "behind every great man stands a woman." Hadley did seem to be that woman.

Nick Harkaway is a master of painting zany inside a deep meaningful novel. A truly unique experience and one of the few books that might actually read completely different upon a reread (which I will do someday). I loved the humor. I loved the characters and I loved the story. Read this story and let it take you in completely unexpected directions. Just when you think you have a grasp on where it is heading he hits you with a mallet.

Beautiful writing, but the plot moved too slowly to keep me interested. Around page 450 I was just wishing for it to be over already.

Julie Powell is not the first person to compare sex and food, and thankfully, she won’t be the last. In this self-absorbed blog-turned-book, Julie Powell, a self-described government drone, needs a project to make her life a little more interesting and give it some (or any) meaning – she’s really not sure. (Someone asked George Mallory "Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?" to which he famously replied, "Because it is there." Same philosophy here.) Julie sets out to cook all or most of the recipes in Julia Child’s iconic cook book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in one year. Small New York apartment, challenging recipes, supportive beleaguered husband, a hunt for rare or unusual ingredients interspersed with fictional glimpses of Julia Child’s life – you can see why the Julie/Julia Project would seem intriguing to readers. An exciting premise certainly, but a poorly-written book. Perhaps that’s why Julie and Julia is now a movie starring Amy Adams. Hollywood certainly will improve on the book – tightening up the pointless details, the endless segues and making us care about Powell and her project more. Powell’s not a good writer, just as many bloggers are not. (There are so many better memoirs out there I wondered how this even got published.) The inane minutia of her childhood and life leave readers exhausted and hoping she’ll get to the point – or any point, really. And the constant pop culture references? Yawn. Okay, already – we know you grew up in the 70s; you watched a lot of TV; you have a crush on Jason Bateman. I kept waiting for the Teen Wolf reference. Powell’s like that friend who only wants to tell you about everything that’s going wrong in her life and needs you as a friend only so she has someone to complain to. Sigh. The book does have some bright spots. When Powell talks about her friends, you can feel the love and affection she has for them – that’s also when the strongest writing comes out. Her co-worker’s IM trysts with a married man are hysterical as is the co-worker’s ultimate reason for breaking up with him. And while I personally wouldn’t compare liver to sensational sex as Powell does, it made a giggling discussion for my book club as we picked a food that compared to sex with our husbands. Powell’s blog readers – or “bleaders” – express many of the feelings that readers of this book will have: “Enough already” (referring to aspics) or “Don’t give up,” (referring to lobsters). Powell also changes the cooking rules recommended by Julia Child when it suits her – substituting tomato paste for seeded, diced, crushed tomatoes when she feels like it but spending hours making mayonnaise. There was no explanation of why she had to follow exactly some of Child’s recommendations for ingredients or why she “cheated” with other ingredients – and don’t forget that Powell explains everything. If you like reading blogs instead of books, and know a little about cooking but don’t really care, you will likely enjoy this book.

The first four were the best. After that, I think they sort of went down hill..

Two and a half stars, cause it was a downer and I thought the ending was total hypocrisy. But good points made about the future of medical engineering and bio-ethics. There's a movie now in the works, so it'll be interesting to see if it's still geared to the YA audience or if the social issues force it to an older demographic. I do have to say, knowing that the author explored this topic because her two teen daughters had major health problems within a few years of each other certainly amps up the validity of the emotions in the story. It's personal, and you can tell.
