Ennhhhh this was so-so. I remember it being relatively humorous, but perhaps the main character was a bit too cynical for my taste, always looking to pull a prank or get a laugh. From the little I am able to recall of it, I remember his threatening a goose and growing exhausted of working in academia at a relatively unfunded and undermotivated collegiate setting. Some humorous parts, but nothing to keep you riveted. It's not one of those "can't put it down" reads. I believe I read about half of it, put it down, and finished it about 4 years later when I re-discovered it and was in need of a livre.

I now understand why RFK is one of the most loved political figures of the past few decaddes. I decided to read this book after watching a documentary on PBS about his role in the Anti-Aparthied movement in South Africa. Overall a pretty good read, not as inspiring as it may have been years ago, but the underlying messages still very much apply. I especially enjoyed the section on Vietnam and his comments related to the "other war".

Rereading this book, I actually found it a little less magisterial - perhaps because Ellroy's told and retold his story several other times since. In particular, the biography and case history of the retired detective Ellroy works with the investigate the decades old homicide of Ellroy's mother just feels like a digression, Ellroy's obsession with procedural true-crime getting in the way of telling his personal story. The personal story is, however amazingly bold and touching. Ellroy's novels are always outlandish and fearless, but his skills have a special impact when applied to the self-disclosure of an extremely painful life.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was nice to see a fantasy heroine not using her magical brawn all over the place, instead being a craftsman. The book had a slightly Young Adult feel to it, dunno if that was intended, a little "soft" so to speak? Not a bad thing, just tone-wise. EDIT: Was corrected, this IS a Young Adult book, so there ya go! I'm...smart. If you liked "Graceling" you'll really like this book, both enjoyable! I LOVED Poison Study, it's one of my fave Vaginal-Fantasy books out there, so this author is a must-read for me. Not quite as in love with THIS book as PS, but definitely will pick up the next to see what Opal has in store for her!
