I would recommend this book to anyone. I'm not gay, poor, female, Jewish, or any other thing that gets tagged to unfortunate and ridiculous prejudices and yet I could relate to this story about a Butch Lesbian dealing with every manner of discrimination and coming out alive, albeit mutilated, beaten, raped, and emotionally walled off. This book is thoroughly able to annihilate the prejudices that you didn't even know existed by showing you that behind all exteriors lurks a human that yearns and bleeds.
This is very enjoyable read - contemporary Britain, stylish people whose lives burst with erotic potential, and a glimpse into the hidden underbelly of life. Litt has a thriller that soon turns from a 'whodunnit' to a 'whydunnit'. And we DO want to know why. As the story unfolds, what keeps us guessing to the end is who was really the victim in this crime. The target appears to be obvious, but all is not as it seems. Characterisation is strong, and the plot well structured, with convincing narrative. Litt is definitely finding a voice with this novel, and I am looking forward to more from him. If I have any issue with the book, it is that somehow the reader never feels at risk. Frequent warnings and threats on his life don't seem to faze Conrad, and we aren't allowed to worry about him either. The descent into an underworld of criminals and violence is never sleazy or sordid, never uncomfortable. Litt should read some Christopher Fowler (SOHO BLACK would be a good place to start) on this score. Malcolm Bradbury (writing in the Daily Mail) described this book as "...splendid characters, brilliant construction, and above all an unmistakable and sharply satirical style." Much as I admire Mr. Bradbury, I think all of these superlatives are overblown and too generous for this enjoyable but marginally flawed book. The Plot CORPSING takes us on a slow motion ride through the event that changes Conrad Redman's life forever. Namely the murder of his ex-girlfriend Lily and his own attempted assassination, which happen within the first few pages. The rest of the novel is taken up with Conrad's search (after spending six weeks in a coma, and six months in recovery) for the reason and person or persons behind the hit. Whodunnit is never in doubt - a dayglo lycra-clad bike courier is the one that pulls the trigger, six times, killing Lily and severely wounding Conrad. Over several interspersed chapters we are treated to minute examination of the damage wreaked by each of the bullets as they pass through the bodies of Lily and Conrad. Conrad's gradual awakening to the realities of life takes in Lily's ambivalent parents, her lovers and an ex-con darling of the comedy circuit. The result is not so much catharsis as unpleasant revelation... The Author: Toby Litt is a promising talent in the style of Charles Higson (he of 'Fast Show' and erstwhile punk band 'The Higsons' fame), and CORPSING was his third publication. Prior to this, he released a book of short stories, ADVENTURES IN CAPITALISM, and a novel, BEATNIKS. CORPSING is, as always, available from Amazon.

Originally posted at: http://iliveforreading.blogspot.com/2... So... What is a Paper Town? That's what I asked when I first picked up this book. Nobody knew so I did what most people would do: Google it. I then came across this definition on "Omnictionary" (which I later found was a part of the book!): A Paper Town is a fictional place that cartographers put on their maps so they can tell when someone breaches copyright and copies their map. They can tell, because it will also contain the fictional place. Wow...they actually do that? Anyway, it didn't really concern me until I reached the part in the book where it mentions 'Paper Towns'. So anyway, on to the review! This book really gets you thinking. The Clues in the poems, the reference to different singers, different phrases–everything, just adds up and the connections between things are AMAZING! I seriously had no idea ANY of those things could possible connect. And the Clues? Hidden in meaningful places, so well hidden with only the smallest hint of where to find them. Of course, Quentin has help from his awesome (and hilarious!) friends, Radar, Ben and Lacey. Every step through this is a thrillingly-close experience of discovery. This is my first John Green novel. I've heard of The Abundance of Katherines and people said it was really good! But this one was standing out in the "new arrivals" in the school library so I just grabbed this one instead. Well. I think I'd better to go to the library to check out The Abundance of Katherines, 'cause this book was AMAZING! I have never been so caught up in a story line like this, which is written so... realistically. The beginning made me laugh a lot though, with Quentin going out at night with Margo, and I still think that maybe it could happen. Not saying that we should break into amusement parks! I really think that the climax AND road trip part was the best though. The climax (I won't tell you what it is) was pretty good, cliffhanging and I didn't really know what to make of it. The road trip part was hilarious, exhilarating and adventurous and I really feel that I there with them as they took turns driving, quickly getting in and out for toilet breaks, etc. What I found interestingly different was the fact that no was one of those "stereo-typical characters". No one was the pretty blonde cheerleader (popular people though!), the tough jock (although...yeah maybe there was one) and all characters were just ones that I actually might find at a high school. And I love how Lacey breaks the barrier of the "social class" in school by going out with Ben :) that was cute! Overall, Paper Towns is a read for those who want a little bit more, something interesting, something to get you thinking. Poetry and Mystery lovers alike will love this book as it offers something special for all readers.

"Remember" It's the reason that Weisel wrote this account of his life in Auswitz. He is the only survivor from his immediate family. It's sad, real, and soul searching. I want my students to know how blessed they are and to "never forget." They hurt and are disturbed by his story, but that's as it should be. They think they have changed after reading it, you will be, too.

Well-written, neatly drawn. But it never sucked me in as much as it did others.

great Printz award winning book. Subtle hints of Scifi and as my co-worker says "it's the cousin sex book!"
