Haunting language, good story, but overly didactic ending.

lovins does a disservice to the environmental movement once again, this time in a pentagon-funded book trying to sell the idea of energy efficiency to large corporations from the energy and car industries. utterly ignores the scarcity of oil and energy, by the way, don't be fooled by the title.

I have totally mixed feelings on this book. It took a long time for the author to set the scene but I stuck with it because I heard the rave reviews. I like some aspects of the themes/stories but there were also a lot of aspects I didn't. Do you ever feel like authors choose too many tragedies for one story? That is how I felt. Plus, I will be honest. I am not always a fan of the constant talk about sex and how integral that has to be to characters. I know, I am super conservative, but that is how it is. So, I did like the book but I also had a hard time with it.
This was a fairly unique Dickens experience, I think. I don't remember ever seeing him use 2 narrators before (or 2 pov's). I really liked it, but was surprised to find several flaws. I guess Dickens was human, after all! Apparently this is considered one of his darker and less successful novels. He did go on to write "A Tale of Two Cities" just after this. And while I can see why this one was less successful, I still enjoyed it very much. I absolutely loved the characters of Amy Dorrit and Arthur Clennam. It's funny but I have actually missed Amy since finishing the book. :) I read it quickly so that I could watch the new BBC version online. Now I wish I had taken my time and savored it more, because the movie adaptation was not watchable for me. Why, oh, why do they have to ADD things to a perfectly harmless story and make it sleazy? If you are considering watching the movie and you are sensitive to such things as a portrayal of a lesbian relationship (SO NOT IN THE BOOK) and pretty heavy sexual innuendos (ditto), then don't watch it. I only watched one of the 6 episodes and was so disappointed I actually cried. (Yes, I think you could consider me sensitive). Anyway, read the book! It's wonderful! Don't watch the movie! Instead, write Andrew Davies angry letters! :)

Very simple, but continues to be one of my favorites. If you're looking for an inspirational, fantastical book, pick this one up.

Very good story expertly written. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series. I really like the fact that most questions are answered and the story seems complete. Very nice!

I was a little hesitant to start reading Cryer’s Cross by Lisa McMann since I didn’t really like Fade and especially, Gone. However, Cryer’s Cross was a quick and creepy read that was hard to put down! The protagonist, Kendall, was very well-developed and was easy to relate to because she’s an average girl. She helps out her parents on their farm, plays soccer and aspires to get out of her small town. But, Kendall also has OCD and the reader can clearly see how it affects her daily life. What I found really interesting was that despite all the negative effects of having OCD, McMann ultimately chose to make Kendall’s OCD beneficial for her. To be honest, I was actually expecting Cryer’s Cross to be scary but I don’t think that’s an accurate description of it. For about half of the story, the only really frightening thing about Cryer’s Cross was that two kids had mysteriously disappeared in a very small town and the passages of “We” that were interspersed between what was happening to Kendall. The pace of the book though picks up when Kendall becomes the next target of “We” – I managed to figure out who “We” was before Kendall – and the tone becomes more ominous. In the end, chilling and disturbing are probably better words to describe Cryer’s Cross.

I've only made the madeleines thus far, but they came out beautifully and were nummy =D EDIT: Overall, absolutely lovely book, and great reading for anyone with a particular fondness for pastry shops (but of course, you could have guessed that...). My one complaint is that the recipes aren't as "everyday" as those in her classic Baking: From My Home to Yours, so I wouldn't want it as a recipe book per say, and there isn't enough other text to really justify more than a library jaunt.

when people ask me to recommend a reference for basic bookmaking, i direct them here. a good book for getting started... clear instruction for 3-dimensional techniques (no small task!), interesting examples that, for the large part, resist being too cute-crafty.
