I love time travel and, combined with a good romance and our main character’s attitude and spunk, Myra McEntire’s debut novel made for a very fun read! Emerson Cole has had a very difficult past, but she’s a fighter and is full of energy, humor, and optimism. She’s been able to pull out of her dark moments and has a good support system in the form of her best friend, Lily, whose own secrets I can’t wait to uncover, and her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Dru. Thomas completely has his sister’s back and is aware of Emerson’s “I see dead people” ability. He has tried to help her in any way he can, which ultimately leads him to a group known as the Hourglass — and Michael Weaver. The relationship between Michael and Emerson was a standout for me. I won’t lie, I did begin to make ugly faces whenever Emerson decided to prattle on about Michael’s abs, lips, and overall hotness, but their chemistry was crazy good. There was a lot of rising anticipation, but more than that, there were the more quiet, sweeter moments when they got to know one another. McEntire also laid out the beginning framework for a love triangle. Kaleb is Michael’s best friend and definitely the outgoing, flirtatious of the two. I did enjoy his character, and there’s no use denying that he and Emerson also had chemistry, but count me in as “Team Michael” — I’m all for the nicer, less aggressive guys. The time travel/science fiction aspects of the story were easy to follow. I didn’t have to dive in too deeply to understand the gist of it because McEntire didn’t bog down the story with unnecessary details. She did, however, do an excellent job in keeping my attention glued to the pages as the main time travel storyline came to the forefront. Even with the twists and surprises that it offered, I know that Hourglass only gave a small taste of what’s to come and I’m very excited to be along on for the ride with Emerson and the rest of the gang. Bring on the next book! Have you read the book? Rate it and comment with your th

I really enjoyed this book because he writes about the obvious and subconscious choices and struggles around them. It's an easy, engaging read with a lot of references to other authors and works. I recommend this book to anyone living in this day and age.

A fabulous collection of essays, available for free under the Creative Commons license at craphound.com, Cory Doctorow's website, along with all his other books. Some of the essays repeat the same examples but overall, a good collection to have around, though I might recommend that you don't read them straight through. The author practices what he preaches in terms of digital rights and I think that is the best endorsement of the points raised in these essays.

Often unwieldy and hard-to-read, though Tolkien seems to get a jail-out-of-free card on that front, it is quite good. You really do have to work hard to get to the gems of the story but it is worth it to flesh out the world of Middle Earth.

I think just one chapter of this book was good (to some extent) and that was the one in which franchman steal Rashele's ship. and also the first paragraph , on next chapter, that Dona talks about people which was impressive. :)

When I read this book I thought that it was going to be really good because I've read books that have been writting like a play and they were really good. But this book I thought it was good but it wasnt origonal. I thought it was very predictable and it wasnt what I thought it would be. I thought it really related tot he Colobine shooting though because the events int his book were very similiar to the events in this book. Its just about how this boy Camron who gets interviewed because his best friend did a shooting because he was getting bullied in school. His friend name was Len and he shot this boy who had been bullying him and then she shot himself. Very predictable right!?

** spoiler alert ** I'm not at all bothered by the pagan underpinnings of this series, that's not why I'm giving The Golden Compass 2 stars. My primary issue is with the characters of Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter. I don't want to 'spoil' any plot points, but let's just say the one who's set up to be the good guy ultimately turns out to be pretty reprehensible, and the one who's set up to be the bad guy is eventually made out to look like, if not the "good" guy, then the slightly-less-bad-than-the-other-guy guy. I can appreciate character arc and change, but that isn't what's happening here. It's more like you learn some questionable stuff about the one who's supposed to be the good guy late in the story, which makes you question whether he's really a good guy at all, but he continues in a heroic role through the series. This isn't a case of the hero with a dark side either, this supposed good guy does something truly horrific at the end of this book, yet it seems we're still supposed to root for him. ---SPOILER ALERT---Also, this is a very, very long book, and the bulk of it centers on Lyra's journey to try and deliver the Golden Compass of the title to Lord Asriel. Yet after hanging in there through nearly two hundred pages of Lyra's trek through the snowy wilderness, filled with near-misses and close calls, when she finally arrives on Lord Asriel's doorstep near the end of the book, he tells her he doesn't need it and she can just keep it. The whole book is about her efforts to deliver the thing, and when she finally does, he doesn't even want it!! If I'd been reading a print edition of the book instead of an ebook, I'd have thrown that book against the wall in anger and frustration when I got to that part. Also, if you have a low tolerance for violence done against children, this is not the book for you.

I accidentally picked up this serial murder book (yup, I just adore them, yuk!) and really enjoyed George's writing. She gets heavily into the character's personalities and motivations. I loved that it was set in London because I had been in many of the places she mentioned.
