Was cute for the style and a couple of interesting lines along the way. Not much separating this from romance novels: pointless choice of exotic locations, melodrama, "hidden depths".

Based on a true story, Jubilee tells the story of the author's great-grandmother's life from her birth as a slave, through the Civil War, to trying to make her own life after emancipation. Jubilee is well-told and I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Gone with the Wind or Cane River.

Loved Zarak's story. Poor guy has had the hardest life and was so interesting to finally get the full insight into why he detests everyone and always has an aggressive, angry attitude to everyone around him. Always felt he was a misunderstood soul, and this book just confirms it. Adore this series. Recommend it!!!

Not as funny as some of his other ones, and written in a more juvenille voice. Still, it has some laughs along with ninjas and cannibals. There is a lot of sex in this book, and a whole lot of spelling/punctuation errors. I guess he did not have an editor for this one.

Looking Good is a great introduction for people who want to learn about the development of male aesthetics over the past century. I enjoyed learning about the evolution of appearance aids especially; Luciano doesn’t go into great depth on the various procedures, but I felt like what she explained was enough for the purposes of her book. Luciano’s strength is always tying back what happened with why it was happening – I love that – lots of connections all over the place! Yay. The organization of the book is a little odd, but it actually works quite well if you’re just reading front to back. Sadly, her “cliff-hanger” closing paragraph statements don’t always get explained in her following sections, so I was left a little unsatisfied on certain claims. I don’t know much about Luciano, but by reading this book I got the feeling that she was something of a feminist, though definitely not a “raging” one. While I have no problem with this, I always appreciate it when authors give a bit more “where I’m coming from” info in their introductions, just so I can understand the reasoning a bit better. She does, however, have a nice chunk of notes in the back of the book explaining some of her source choices. I wish she would have gotten over citing Schwarzenegger for most of her body-building examples: true, he is the one most US citizens would be most familiar with, but there were others she could have drawn on to better illustrate some of her points.

Read this on vacation. The premise is a strict vegan gets shot by his daughter and loses the use of his arm. Lots of psycho babble and theories about was it an accident or not, etc. Didn't make me like animal activists too much. (The man works for an organization modeled after PETA). You could skip this one.

It's a fun book which requires a lot of flipping back and forth to remember the ages and dates of the characters. The book does a great job of keeping that mostly clear, you're never actually lost for what's going on (at least, I wasn't).

Pretty much the starting point from all my reading/television interest. ever.

The book is a quick, light read, and I really enjoyed it. But I wasn’t a big fan of Lola. I could see why she acted as she did at 17, but throughout the book, I had to keep reminding myself that Lola was 27 because she didn’t seem to grow up much at all. She couldn’t understand why Dougie was so angry with her, and she was shameless in her pursuit of him to the point where I was embarrassed for her in several scenes. She also was very shallow, wanting to break her mother and her boyfriend up simply because the boyfriend had a bushy beard, hairy toes, and a wardrobe in need of updating–even though her mother kept going on about how happy she was. If the point of the storyline was that Lola had changed over the past 10 years, I guess I just didn’t see it. However, I loved Sally and Gabe. Gabe as a fledgling paparazzi was hilarious, and putting neat freak Gabe and messy Sally in the same flat made for some interesting scenes. Though predictable, An Offer You Can’t Refuse was fun and captivating. Full review on Diary of an Eccentric.
