'The Mom's Guide...' is a great book for anyone even remotely thinking about going green with fabulous, easy and inexpensive ways to get started, and for those who are already well on their way to being green a myriad of suggestions to decrease environmental impacts. Terra Wellington includes not just products, but manufacturers we can use to continue on the road to going green. Finally, even for those who couldn't care less about being green, she has included many money-saving tips that, coincidentally, help save the environment.

I picked up this book because I am planning a trip to Paris. However, it only showed the dark ugly side of Paris around the time of Napoleon. I did not enjoy it as much as Philippa Gregory's books. However, when I got to the end and learned the meaning of the title, and I read that many of the characters were real, I appreciated the book a bit more.

Page-turner with a captivating (no pun intended) story, although it was choppy and overly didactic in parts (and the Africa part was full of patriarchal nostalgia which might be culturally accurate but did not always sit well with me). The last part of the book was especially moving to read - the part sharing Haley's own experiences with re-connecting with his ancestry - and as I read it, I tried to ignore my doubts about how "perfectly" it all seemed to fit. Now, after reading about Haley's plagiarism and the fact that he almost certainly did not trace his lineage as described in the book, I feel cynical. I would rather have an incomplete but real genealogy like in Henry Louis Gates' "African American Lives" miniseries (which was very powerful and touching). And I guess I don't understand why someone who's obviously a gifted writer (Autobiography of Malcolm X!) would lie and plagiarize instead of just using his talents to describe what's true.

A tad long, but as usual is filled with the perverse from a mother that runs a tattoo shop to a sister that likes to hold her effete brother's mini-me while they watch TV. It is hard to believe he has such a broad audience (which only proves that most people enjoy titillation as long as it doesn't come in a brown paper bag), but that may also be due to Irving's easy, readable style. After 500 pages it gets a bit painful, but worth the trip regardless.

This is the only play from which I have memorized a monologue. Friend Romans, countrymen lend me your ears is forever etched in my brain thanks to a school assignment. A good political intrigue play.

This is a lovely book. Out of print and a little hard to find, it makes a great gift.

I listened to the audio, and wished I had read the book so I could have enjoyed the pictures of the art mentioned. Both the main character and the plot was too shallow for my liking. There was so much sex that it actually got boring and annoying (imagine that). The only thing that kept me going was the mention of artists. Its been decades since I took art history in school, and the book makes me want to go back and refresh my memory.

Humboldt's Gift was a very good, if dense, novel. It was particularly interesting knowing that he pretty much taught Philip Roth how to write novels; you can see what Roth picked up from him, and what Roth added (or, as one curmudgeon I know pointed out, subtracted). The philosophical passages bogged me down at times, but that may have been more my fault than the author's.
