What a great way to get a background on Muslim-Americans and the struggle of one young woman. The time she was growing up in Indiana was not that long after I left, the author's discriptions of Indiana in the winter were so 'right on' that I felt i was looking out the car window with her. I kept thinking that the small town I grew up in would have been different....but i know that's not true. And I'm amazed that this whole community was so close and so unknown to me. As is frequently true these communities grew up close to the universities. I am particularly fond of books about women and diversity, so found this delightful, disturbing, insightful and a real joy to read.

meh...the supernatural aspect was interesting...but it was just another fluffy easy read for the most part.

kind of cool in that this writer is "of-my-generation." not thrilled with the book on the whole, though... i wanted to edit about 1/4 of it out. interesting depiction of a time/place/community. just, her writing style is looser and more casual than i generally like in novels.

You can't deny this is a beautifully written book - stunningly visual, poignant, boldly original, comedic etc etc etc. I can't really say anything about it that hasn't already been said. All I can really add are my own musings: I did find it interesting that that as imaginative as Gibson was in this book, his predictions of the internet and electronic media were in some ways more limited and rooted to the physical world than what has since come to pass - data exists in a physical place, the internet is generated in a building, there's little user-generated content, software patches exist as physical objects etc etc. Not that I'm blaming him for "getting it wrong" - it's just an interesting aspect to ponder. I wish I had read this in 1984 to really understand the context of the book. I spent a lot of time trying to remember what people knew and didn't know then. I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the ending. It felt contrived and quite deliberately enigmatic to me. I could almost hear Gibson's disembodied voice... "They'll be debating this one for DECADES! Bwahahahahaha......." Other than that, I really loved this book. It's a masterpiece for a reason.

I read this with my kids, it was fun to read together. They loved learning the beginnings of Narnia.

Am I a brain or do I have a brain? Am I sure? Where am I? oh this is good....

Volume 6 winds up the Akira saga. This is the best manga I have read. The Japanese are the masters of monster-making. I still could not really tell if Tetsuo was dead at the end or not. His being seemed to infuse everything. Very Buddhist. I wonder why Akira never talked and only uttered gutteral sounds.

I went into this book thinking that it would talk a little about things I understood like acting and dancing and that the rest of her life would go right over my head. However, I found a very different story waiting inside. Santiago's story had elements of every young persons life who's ever been different somehow, or whose parent(s) were overprotective. I think that through her relationships with her family, friends and boyfriends she sends a positive message to all young women.
