This wasn't my favorite Jane Austen, maybe due to the story being so short, but it was still worth reading and entertaining. Jane Austen always brings characters into her story that remind us of people we know and it's always interesting to read her commentary on such characters. She always makes me think about my perceptions of people. Fun story, but I wish it had been longer and more developed.

really interesting true story/premise, but seemed kind of slow at times and didn't follow up on certain aspects of the storyline that I would have liked. also would have been helpful to have a list or description of the characters and their positions in the government/army in an appendix because it was easy to lose track.

After a fantastic start this was strangely anticlimactic, verging on quite boring by the end. I couldn't understand it. I think the fact that there was a total of 2 female characters in the entire book might've had something to do with it - so boring. I was a bit confused that Beric didn't seem to care much when he found out he was Titus's son, even though he spent most of the book obsessing about feeling like an 'outcast' in every society because he knew nothing about his real parents. And why didn't he go back to Rome after finding out he was in fact Roman, to find Glaccus and Lucilla's husband conveniently dead so that he could marry her? Would've made a FAR better story. I did like the fact that it was so well-researched, especially the way most Romans were portrayed as viewing slaves as animals - they referred to things like "meat-fed galley slaves" and "a well-matched team" of blonde-haired litter-bearers. In a lot of historical fiction I think this idea is seen as too repugnant for the modern audience or something because whilst Romans are often shown being cruel to their slaves, they usually understand that they're human and treat them accordingly. Or maybe the current social distate for slavery is so strong that modern authors find it hard to get into the ancient Roman mindset? Who knows. Anyway in conclusion I would definitely still like to read more by this author.

was alright. very relationship and character-driven. very very very very believable and "realistic" whatever that means. but somehow disappointing. finished the book convinced that we can neither do the same things that our parents did nor can we reject what they've done...?

"It seemed to her that everything she had ever needed to know in her life she had known at one time or another, but she just hadn't known all those things at once, at the same time, at a single moment" (284). Lorrie Moore writes in a series of moments, articulated in odd precise prose. Although her characters may not be capable of synthesizing these moments, Moore does it well. With each story I walked away sobered by her subjects' alienation and longing, appreciative of all wisps of humor.

Love, love, loved it. Read them and you will too. Whether she gives away the killer or leaves you guessing you will still love reading the books. She is that good of an author.
