this was a fantastic read. i got a real sense of place from this novel -- whether it was the empire state building, prague, antartica or long island, the sharp concise descriptions put me right there. the comic book aspect was great, and the writing is engaging. the characters are very defined and go through many changes in this long story. but it never felt like it was dragging or it was boring. thoroughly enjoyable.

I loved Sugar and Ice! Claire Boucher is a middle school ice skater, plucked from her small town into an elite training camp by a world renowned coach. I live in Florida, but I was in the land of snow and maple syrup the whole time I spent reading this wonderful book. The locker room scenes played like a movie in my head. The author's knowledge of the ice skating world and its jargon opened the door for me to a place I'd never been; ice skating terms I didn't know only made the story more real. Best aspect of story: Claire's very real insecurities and dealings with other girls. One thing I loved was the idea that Claire doesn't seize upon the scholarship immediately. She has mixed feelings, reluctance, fear--and it's that fear that hit me as so true. It's scary to be taken from your comfort zone, even if where you're going is up. And those tween years can be catty enough in school hallways, but WOW! cutthroat in competition. Kate delivers a nice twist and an ending I didn't expect. I quickly passed my extra copy to my fifth grade neighbor next door. Definitely recommended!

I have been reading this since December. It's huge. Most of the humor at the beginning is very cheap and offensive - fart jokes and violence, but eventually the nobility comes through. There's some great huge sections of text where people tell stories - short little novellas. In the 2nd half, things get much more soulful and heady - very much worth the reading. And I do, in fact, feel like I climbed a mountain.

This was a magical book about one man rising from a life of disappointment to give some children a sense of self and discovery. This man, known as both Pop Eye and Mr. Watts, is the only remaining white person on an island caught up in the vagaries of war. While the rebels and the redskins both impose their will on the few remaining black people living in the community, a school of sorts is resurrected by Mr. Watts who teaches not out of any true advanced learning but from his heart and one book, Great Expectations. Both the book and the teacher exceed all hopes with some of the children who attend the school while posing a threat to some of their parents. Delightful book that is both whimsical in places and heartbreaking in others.
