Ali Yewdell highly recommended this book to me. It made me cry quite a bit and me thought of how tough it can be for mothers - how much sacrfrice they give for their children. While reading the story I also thought a lot about the struggles poor Americans have to face.

Only read this because my book club chose it. Not sure why. Cheesy celeb bio. Since I like drug addict/recovery stories (a la Invervention), I enjoyed it somewhat. But, frankly, I don't like this guy.

I enjoyed this book, but I had a hard time getting through it. It seemed a little slow to me. I didn't devour it in one sitting like I do with some books. I had a hard time picturing the main character in my head.

This novel takes an interesting spin through Nigeria, Darfur and Sierra Leone, not to mention the usual Cross mayhem in Washington, D.C. In some respects, it succeeds in telling some of the unheard stories of the atrocities in Africa; however, we are not able to gain a deep exploration or even a detailed description of a locale before being whisked away again. At some point, one has to wonder what planet Alex Cross is from, because he seems to have a superhuman ability to survive everything.

i read this book years ago but still sometimes think about it. i'm currently reading "a million little pieces" by james frey, but my mind just keeps going back to this augusten burroughs book, which i found more engaging a read. the scene in which augusten examines his apartment and takes out the many bags of trash just blew my mind. it's a reality check not often disclosed in anecdotes of recovery from substance abuse.
